It would be sad if, after neither Clinton nor Obama gets the nomination
or neither is elected, that some would conclude that "America is not ready for a woman of an African-American president."

There are many reasons why neither should be elected at this point and I hope that we would not grasp the easiest excuse.

1. "Some" will always grasp the easiest excuse. My hope is that "most"...
...will come to the proper conclusion.

2. the fact that they both are running is historical in is own right.
I am not enamored with Hillary, but I am impressed with Bill Richardson. He would be my first choice, then edwards, then Obama. I am convinced that Gore will not run.

3. Shirely Chisholm ran in 1972

and Jessee Jackson ran in 1988. And, of course, Geraldine Ferraro ran in 1984.

The difference, of course, is that Clinton and Obama are a lot more credible candidates than either.

Wanted to add about Richardson. He, too, looks great on paper but he also has demonstrated his capabilities and he is articulate.

He is a governor from a Southwestern state, with track record in foreign affairs. I don't know much about him, at this point I am still loyal to Edwards, but am open to listen to what he has to say.

6. shirley spoke at my college graduation.
I will never forget her comments.

Never be content with the present, for the present can always be improved. Never be content with injustice, for that same injustice may come back to haunt you.
Never be content sitting back and watching, because when you act, you improve yourself AND your world. Never be content with the state of the poor, for but for an accident of history, there lies your future.

I wrote those words down, and memorized them.

Then, a few years later, the Late Illinois Justice Seymour Simon said something similar, about reading advance sheets, working hard, being honest and donating legal time to the needy. always defend the underdog, for you are blessed with a license to do justice, and they need justice the most.

Jesse was never a serious candidate. In Chicago, the Feds cut a deal with him that kept him out of jail for massive fraud. PUSH Excel was created as a result. Jesse used strong arm tactics, drug dealing gangs for physical "convincing" and probably did not file tax returns for 15 years runnning.

4. Exactly - white men have lost every presidential race we've had
- and none of them lost because they were black or female.

You're right - there are all kinds of reasons that people don't win. It would be a damned shame if race or gender are used as the excuse for a loss - especially since this would be used as a reason to keep minorities and women from running in the future.

7. What is more likely to happen:
Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama or both is nominated and loses.

The next morning, the MSM start gloating about how they lost because they were "too far left."

You heard it here first.
