13. That's where my eyes first got wet ......
The picture of his Dad, carried for fifty years.

Mention of his son, following in the family tradition. The brother. His Mom ...... the whole family thing. So personal and yet so much the story of Everyman ......

32. Exactly!
Webb is able to make this speech, all the while knowing the danger his son is facing right now.

And as angry as he is at Bush, that's how proud he is of his Dad & his son.

12. Senator Webb's closing line: "If you don't do it, Bush, we'll show you the fucking way."
Well it was something like that, anyway. Webb started out kind of calmly, built it to a crescendo and delivered a knockout in his final minutes, punctuated with a finale that blew me away.

use it, because robber barons fits to a tee.

30. Average Americans understand it...
They get the whole complex situation in one phrase...it should be used by every Democrat in Congress, every Democratic Presidential candidate, every single time they speak about the economic realities we are suffering from.

I'm just giddy about him using it, and his whole speech was terrific. I've already sent him an email, thanking him!

20. He had the power and serenity of those who are completely comfortable
that they are speaking truth just to do it - not to shock, not to self-aggrandize, not to self-promote but because it is what it is.

Wow! And finally, someone addressed head-on the inequality of a CEO earning 400 times the wage of a worker and the erosion of the working and middle class.

A Leader. This is what one looks like.

24. That's a very important point ..... Webb is a whole lot more than just an anti-Iraq-War guy.
He's been preaching economic equality at least as much - maybe more - than 'get out of Iraq'.

28. I love Jim Webb!!!
:patriot: That man is a true patriot. His father sacrificied for this country, he sacrificed for this country, his brother, his son...it made me cry listening to him speak. The speech was incredible. We have been yearning for 5 years for someone, anyone to speak up about Bush's free pass to the "robber barons" and his idiotic war. FINALLY someone spoke up and gave it it like it is. Now that is putting passion into politics. I got chills there at the end. Smart, intelligent man. By the way, Tweety, I don't think Webb is as conservative a Dem as you make him out to be. He is a populist!

29. When you look & listen to Webb, you are struck by how much
he loves his country, & how much his family has given back.

And when you look at Dubya, you see how much his family has gained from this country. Generation after generation the Bushes have become richer & richer, playing the system.

Jim Webb makes me proud to be an American, just as Dubya makes me embarrassed.

They are truly polar opposites, & someone more eloquent than me could express this much better.

34. And VERY VERY nice that he went second. POWERFUL speech,
letting him point out with subtlety how much time his family has given to military service to his country - establishing his credentials, versus the "service" given by bush and cheney.

He had a WONDERFUL, in fact SUPERB closing line - "if he does (basically come to his senses on the war), we will join him. If he does not, we will be showing him the way."

And he went second. He had the last word. THAT'S the last thing you heard, and the freshest point you'll take away from tonight.

These presidents took the right kind of action, for the benefit of the American people and for the health of our relations around the world. Tonight we are calling on this president to take similar action, in both areas. If he does, we will join him. If he does not, we will be showing him the way.

37. i was on the edge of my seat
afterward I ran around the house yelling WOW!

i was nervous when he brought out the picture - afraid it was going to be something that would come across contrived - but he did it beautifully. And in the context of what he was about to say, it was ever so appropriate. His family's years of service contrasted with the shrub and cheney - well - lest it have gotten by anyone, tweety reiterated and explained nicely.
Webb very politely made the point that he had a right to say what he was saying, and any damned "swiftboat" shit was going to go right down the throat of whenever tried it.

This wasn't a speech as much as it was a talk from his heart.

No speechwriters producing gooblygook. Just his own quiet eloquence.
