A friend of ours called & said she was disappointed in Nancy Pelosi's body language

during Bush's attempt at an academy performance tonight. She is a big fan of Pelosi's and said she thought Pelosi was way too warm and fuzzy tonight with the president. She got so disgusted with Bush she only watched part of it, but she said Pelosi seemed way too eager to jump up and clap for Bush way too often. My friend said Democrats should be more discerning in their applause for him because he's never backed up anything he's said in the past. She said Pelosi was quicker to applaud than Cheney.

Is this true? Was Nancy too enthusiastic and cozy with Bush tonight? I didn't watch it live so I'm only going by what I was told on the phone.

I got a bit annoyed on occasion (* made his standard 'we have to take the fight to the enemy' speech, mentioning soldiers, so I suspect she felt she had to stand and clap. I also think the Dems respond to what she's doing if they feel they have to.)

I think we need to examine this knee-jerk expectation of nastiness in our repartee with "the enemy." It is infinitely classier to behave with dignity and clobber your opponents with policy and an open respectful dialog than to get into the mud and wrestle around with them. Lobbing barbs is fun and snarky and doesn't cause one to break much of an intellectual sweat. I have no problem with Nancy Pelosi acting with dignity. She's kicking their asses and they know it. The Democrats are sitting in the catbird seat and knowing that keeps a smirk on my face. But that's me.

I can't believe that people are slamming her for clapping at a SOTU. She would have had nothing to gain by acting the way some expected her to. She knew Bush was bombing, and she knew everyone else knew it, too. She behaved exactly as she was supposed to.

I am more interested in what can unite us. Some powerful people make a lot of hay out of keeping us fighting "those other guys". "They" have a lot more in common with us than I like to think.

I don't really hate Republicans for not being aware enough about the world to recognize greed and corruption when they see it. I just want them to be educated so that they wake up and see the light of day. I want to do everything I can to enact a progressive agenda and get real prgressives in government.

Pelosi is very close to my political philosophy. I respect Pelosi for being pleasant and professional in public, all the while sticking it to them hardball in the halls of Congress.

I believe in concentrating on the things which bring us together. I don't believe in animosity and division and in hating the other. It is a challenge for me, too, but even the shrub is human and deserves more then pure hate.

We have to work WITH our countrymen/women, with ALL of them to make this country as good as it can be. There is a lot of education to do. DU helps with that, I think. It is a place where curious people can get lots of good information.

- because of her incessant blinking. I began blinking trying to watch her! She then chewed on her lip and the combination was very distracting. I would think it nerve wracking to be in the line of the camera's for that amount of time but - as a politician - I would have thought she would be used to it.

19. She didn't clap at everything. As a matter of fact.....

...as another poster pointed out on another thread tonight, when Pelosi stood and clapped the camera was on her. However, when Cheney stood & clapped (and Nancy stayed seated), the camera panned out to the full room (so that you wouldn't notice so much that she stayed seated or didn't clap).

I noticed there were times when she didn't clap at all, and one instance in particular where there was a side-shot and she was like grabbing her elbows almost b/c she didn't want to "applaud that message" it seemed.

All I can say is:

1) the Dems need to be polite (you get more flies with honey than with vinegar)

2) this is a WHOLE NEW ROLE for Pelosi (had to feel a bit uncomfortable/strange for her maybe tonight? Getting used to this new seat?) and EVERYONE was watching her (not the least of which b/c it's such a relief not to have to look at ole Denny-boy's ugly mug anymore.

3) if you watched her eyes & facial expressions, it was pretty 'clear' when her mind was thinking :crazy: - I was thinking to myself that I'd bet her family knows those expressions really well, lip licking, mouth moving in a certain fashion....etc. I also was thinking she's gonna need to "put on some chapstick tonight" before she goes off to bed, cause her lips are gonna be sore from all of that licking! lol
