I heard a man say the following in a McDonald's in Zanesville, OH...
"I wouldn't vote for her even if she was a man." There were several people with him, and they all agreed -- including the women.

I suspect that they were talking about Hillary Clinton, but I'm not sure.

9. it's really sad. I just made a post in another thread about this
and it drives me nuts. Hell, other countries seem to be able to have female leaders with no problems, yet here in "advanced" America, we're so backwards on some things that it makes my blood boil.

13. I don't think it's because she's a woman;
it's because she's Hillary. She isn't a true dem. She has stuck by bush for just about anything he's wanted. You can always find her with the repubs. I don't care for her at all and I hope I don't have to vote for her. I find her completely unremarkable.

18. I won't vote for Hillary in the NY primary.
Hillary has pandered to the right wing Nazis of this country. She sponsored a flag burning law and voted for the war unapologetically, and appears to want to triangulate.

I see Hillary as a moderate and I would only vote for her if she got the nomination of the Democratic party.

20. Look, I am not a big Hillary supporter at the moment
although I will vote for her if she wins the nomination obviously, and I think she'd be a good president even if I do find her to be too much of a centrist for my personal taste, BUT I think that the biggest fear that the Pukes have for her (and Pelosi) is that she is a powerful woman.

yes, she's a Clinton, so that is another strike in their minds.

And I was responding to the "I would not vote for her even if she were a man" quote. It's pretty damn sexist, and even more sad that in 21st Century America race and gender are even issues.

The problem with Hillary, imo, is that among the Left, we often don't like her because she is too far right. The Right hates her because she is a woman, a Democrat, and a Clinton and would definitely show up to vote against her.

22. Two problems with Hil. She took rethug money & dropped vote reform.
When she started getting heat on Vote/Election Reform she not only dropped the bill she had previously supported, but scrubbed any mention of supporting Vote/Election Reform from her website.

Then she's getting money from Rupert Murdock of FAUX News fame.

So if she has no objections to voting machines that can be used to cheat and she's cozy with media who cheerleads the cheaters, I am very leary of her and that isn't dependent on what is or isn't hanging between her legs.

26. I know. I am not saying Dems are not going to vote for her because she's a woman
but that a large number of Republicans and Independents might not for that reason.

Would they not vote for her because she's not the right woman? I think the right person can draw people in. I don't believe she's that person.

21. It wasn't the particular woman that bothered me but rather the...
Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 05:32 PM by I Have A Dream
fact that it was worded as "I wouldn't vote for her even if she was (sic) a man." Whoever it was was being ruled out because she was a woman and then also because the person didn't like whoever it was.

I was just surprised that people still think this way. I certainly don't live in a progressive area, but I don't think that I would have heard it where I live. (Maybe I'm really just living a sheltered life though.)

It sounds like to me the person is being very clear that man or woman, Hilary is not going to get her vote for other reasons.

11. Very sad
Unfortunately, I live in this state and have people I must interact with who seem to think things are peachy and that women have it all. However, it's never a woman that says those things.

I'm not misogynous at all - but many, many, many people in the red/purple states ARE.

That's Hillary's biggest problem.

my problem is that she is not progressive and she is part of the 'good ole boys' party establishment. i would like to get rid of the machine, not elect more of it. for those same reasons, i am not a big bill fan either.

33. It's in Ney's old district - very conservative
Space won because of the corruption - and because they ran a bankrupt republican against him. Don't get me wrong - I'm a HUGE Zack Space supporter and worked long hours for almost a year to get him elected. However, the district was carved out to be republican. We won because people were fed up with corruption.

35. Devil's advocate...
it seems to me that what he was trying to say, and perhaps wording poorly, is that her gender has nothing to do with him not wanting her to be president.

I know her gender's got nothing to do with me not wanting her to be president.

38. Her defenders really don't get
Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 12:10 AM by fujiyama
how disliked she is by many. They base her chance of winning off some national polls, which are meaningless. No one has made it clear which states she can flip. I'd be surprised beyond all belief if she would be able to keep Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in the blue column. That's just two states.

Do people SERIOUSLY think she could flip Ohio? New Mexico? Nevada? (HA, yeah right, Hillary will play in Nevada!?), Arizona, Missouri? Florida?. Do we want to blow all the inroads we've made in Colorado and Virginia? How much time has it taken to get where we are in those states? It took this much fucking up by republicans, but it was still so close as we saw in Montana, Virginia, and Missouri. The type of people that voted for Webb and Tester aren't automatically voting for our candidate regardless. Ohio and Pennsylvania were exceptions, where we won pretty handily, but the incumbents were especially weak in a very weak year for republicans. Sure, '08 shouldn't be much better, but the simple fact is, Santorum and DeWine aren't on the ballot. What appeal does she hold? Is she charismatic? Does she have answers to a war she supported and has NEVER regretted voting for?

A Hillary nomination is a top down disaster for the party.

I have friends that know little about politics and people already think she's a "flip flopper". No they're not RW fanatics. Yeah, I could have attempted to rationalize her weasling on Iraq, but I'm at a loss to explain what her position has been.

Plus, she really wasn't worth my energy defending her. Don't get me wrong. I'll hold my nose voting for her...but no one has said how she appeals as a NATIONWIDE candidate.
