Anti-War Groups Plan Surge on Washington

By Aaron Glantz / IPS

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 24 - Peace activists from around the United States will converge on Washington Saturday for what organisers hope will be the largest demonstration to date against the Iraq war.

"We expect a turnout in the six figures," said Tom Andrews, a former Democratic congressman who now runs the group Win Without War, which is organising the march along with True Majority, Working Assets, the RainbowPUSH Coalition, the National Organisation for Women and the national umbrella group United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ).

UFPJ's Leslie Cagan told IPS that the level of energy in the antiwar movement has spiked since the November election, when voters ended Republican majorities in both houses of Congress.

"The voters of this country figured out that they could use the November elections as a vehicle to voice their opposition to the war," Cagan said. "What happened there was that the voters gave Congress a mandate to end the war in Iraq and bring the troops home."

That success at the polls gave antiwar citizens more optimism that a large demonstration might make an impact, she said.

In mid-November, United for Peace and Justice called a demonstration for the nation's capital for Jan. 27, with other large mobilisations planned for Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco.

1. Always like Tom Andrews. Hope lots go to this one.
I see such a mess in the Middle East coming. These last few years will look like a day in the country from what we are about to see. The whole place has been near the boiling point for many years and Bush just turned up the heat. I think it will boil over in to all the countries in the Middle East. You just can feel it in the air. Our Army may help the people running but in general I wish the our army were over in the USA. You just know if anything looks like 'the West' these religious nits will go after it.

War IS breaking out all over, and I think it's a direct result of the US actions.

4. Thanks I did not see that but think it interesting.
I do not think that Bush made this mess but just make it come on faster and we may have been able to keep it down and got rid of it if he had not done what he did. The countries may have got a hold of it before it got this far. Like Saudi has started some education for women and things like that. I think Bush has made it all go back wards my self. Now we have all the nut cases out and killing each other and it was better when each country had some hold on them. I see the whole Middle East going up my self. I think they will have to fix the problem and not us. Oil cost will do us in for sure. We will need to re-think how we live. I do not think you can get oil if the country is in the middle of a war.
