Black/Women Vote: Hillary vs. Obama Pt. 2
For the purpose of discussion, I will provide bits on this issue. I hope you all enjoy and discuss thoughtfully. This can be an intriguing discussion if everyone contributes thoughtfully.

It must be noted that some dynamics have changed and will change through the election process; the change could swing either way. That's where thoughtful discussion comes in.

Quickhits-
A poll cited on CNN has Hillary with:
40% of blacks vs. 21% for Obama.
42% of Democratic women (I think the closest competitor was 17%).
37% of liberals (I don't recall the closest competitor.

For the record, there's no agenda as neither of these candidates is my number 1 pick. There's also no agenda in me leaving out Edwards who will also play well among blacks. He's my favored candidate at this time. I left him out because the debate has been how women and those of African descent will fall when it comes to Hillary and Barak. Hopefully we can have some good thoughtful discussion. The first thread was pretty successful in that regard. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=3069944">Pt.1 can be found http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=3069944">here.

1. Well, I'm a white woman, like Hillary, but I feel more inclined to vote for Obama.

My first choice is that white movie star guy but if he doesn't run then Obama is probably my next choice (followed by Richardson).

My point is - white chicks don't necessarily support white chicks so why do we think African Americans will automatically support Obama.

It is early.

We will see how things play out.

2. race trumps gender among people of color

The OJ trial proved that. And black women activists
have consistently said so.

They believe womens lib is for white middle class women who
are financially well
off enough economically to have time
for womens lib-which for them is not a major concern.
and who can blame them?

but its irrelevant anyway-assuming we all will
have the good judgment to vote for the party
nominee regardless of whom he or she may be.

stirring up petty internecine squabbles only helps
republicans.

4. Exactly. People, especially in a primary, vote according to who best represents their views. n/t

3. I believe this will change quickly
once Obama is in full swing. There is no way the Clinton camp is not nervous about Obama's likely entrance into this race.

5. No. The Clintons will retain large voting support from African-Americans.

7. Right. It'll be largely divided among 3: Clinton, Obama, Edwards...
...in whatever ratios. Certainly the others will share small portions as well. The black vote, as all other demographics in the primaries, will be split. They vote in bloc in the general election, not primaries, and even then it's because they're voting on the individual who best represents their political views.
