1. Back in the 2000 race, WHY OH WHY did Al choose Lieberman as a running mate?
That really disturbs me, and brings up some questions about his foreign policy leanings, etc.

I really like him, but what was that about?

5. Maybe so. But I'd have to look at both of their positions/records prior to 2000
to see if that's a true statement. I'd be surprised if Lieberman's views have changed dramatically.

The other reason this concerns me is, IF Gore runs and is elected...again...then the running mate is VERY important to me. Just in case something...unexpected... happens to Gore.

Call me ultra-cynical, but one way to get an insider into power who might not have the popularity to do it on their own, is to run him/her with the one who IS popular and then arrange for an accident.
Not entirely an impossibility given the current climate of do-or-die power struggles.

7. Believe it or not, Lieberman still has a pretty liberal voting record
The change in his votes have to do with the range of bills he's presented with. In 2000 there was a Democratic president, so more progressive (and less insane) measures were coming thru Congress for consideration. Since then, there's been an insane war going on that Lieberman has hitched himself to.

His voting on abortion rights, animal rights, environment, etc remain very strong. On the budget he's gotten less hawkish since the war started. He's got a stronger rating now from the ACLU than he did in 2000. So it's tough to generalize on a guy like that. He's still a panderer, that won't ever change.

8. Thanks. I was aware of his liberal leanings in domestic issues. It is his history on foreign policy
that interests me most. I'm very curious how the matching of Gore and Lieberman came about too.

13. Lieberman supports shipping good paying American jobs overseas
He's supported every Free Trade agreement that has come across. Those agreements hurt unions and all American workers.

Lieberman is a corporatist. At best he's a moderate Republican and a neo-con on foreign policy.

10. To distance himself from Clinton and the Lewinsky scandal?
Lieberman was the most vocal (pious, sanctimonious, creepy) critic of Clinton on the Democratic side of the aisle. I'm afraid Gore's advisers saw his eight years of service with Clinton as a liability rather than an asset, and led him to pick the worst possible running mate to show his "independence." A very stupid move with Clinton's approval ratings in the high 60s.

11. But don't forget that choice was also hailed as groundbreaking because of
Lieberman's religion.

17. Why Gore picked Lieberman
Lieberman was one of the first Dem Senators to speak out against Clinton's inappropriate (mis)behavior and abuse of his power over a vulnerable star-struck intern, followed by untruthful and misleading public statements and attempts to "hush-up" the affair by keeping the victim quiet.

As Bill's VP, Gore could not publicly criticize his boss. But by picking Lieberman as his running mate, Gore sent out a clear signal that he did not approve of Clinton's (mis)behavior.

I know there are a few Clinton fans who secretly admire their "Big Dog" - but most Americans (especially parents) would not like the guy to be in charge of employing their daughter. Certainly - if I treated interns like that in my workplace -- I could expect to be asked for my resignation.

I say Bill Clinton should have resigned in February 1999, right after the Senate voted 50-50 on the charge of obstruction during the impeachment hearings. The 22nd amendment would allow Al Gore to finish the last 2 years of Clinton's last term and then go on to win 2 full 4-year terms as President.

We certainly would have been a heck of a lot better off than we are today !! :)

19. That was about appealing to "moderate" Democrats.
At that time, Lieberman was a moderate. And religious, which really mattered, also. He was also well-liked then.

15. He's seems pretty confident that he's running.
And he's right that all the signs really point to the fact that he is- except maybe his weight.

But, I guess I tend to agree with the people who think we'll see how he looks at the Oscars- if he's slimmed down, he's running. If not, maybe not.

16. Thanx for the link !!
I predict that the race for the Dem nomination will stay wide open thru the Fall.

Personally I don't like the early start to the 2008 Presidential election campaign. Don't forget that Bill Clinton announced his candidacy in October 1991 and still went on to win.

Candidates are taking the risk that people will get bored of their campaigns before 2008!

If I'm right then it could provide the circumstances for Al Gore to "change his mind" and enter the race as late as November 4th, which would be exactly one year before election day.

I say "change his mind" - but I believe that right now Al Gore is keeping his options open. He hasn't ruled out running again and he still has some time to watch the field and consider his options.

Let's all find ways to show our support for Al Gore! :)

20. Worth watching !!
I strongly recommend folks to watch this video (follow the link in the OP).

In 5 minutes, Tim Dickinson does a great job of laying out the case for an Al Gore candidacy.

I also love that line they put along the top of the latest Rolling Stone cover ...

WHY GORE SHOULD RUN -- AND HOW HE CAN WIN
