Carville says Gore and Dean were right too often...especially about the war.
Edited on Fri Jan-26-07 01:45 PM by madfloridian
In the Rolling Stone article about Gore, Carville says something interesting.

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/13248532/why_gore_should_run__and_how_he_can_win

"Even Gore's prescience on the war may not be the towering advantage that many are predicting. "One is always penalized for being right about too many things," Carville says. "Prophets are shot in this town."

That bastard said the same thing about Dean..."right too often". He sure hates people who are right.

From a college rally in 2005...imagine telling college kids it is not good to be right in Washington.

"Using Al Gore as an example, Carville said being a smart candidate is not enough.

“It’s actually possible to be wise, right and strong,” he said.

"But Carville added that no one in Washington likes anyone who is right too often. Howard Dean’s accurate assessment about the failure of the war in Iraq helped kick him out of the running for president despite his passion, Carville said."

Hey Carville, these sound like talking points to give cover to those who voted for the war and haven't yet taken a firm stand against it, haven't really admitted to being wrong. I mean this is very clever stuff, James, you just amaze me.

2. I'm not quite sure that's what he is saying
Its not that he doesn't like people who are always right. I'm interpreting that as saying when a dem is constantly right (as are Gore and Dean) they are cuffed about by Washington insiders, and yet they are consistently proven right.

That occurs to us dem foot soldiers who say the war is wrong, bush lied, Plame was an undercover agent, cheney was drunk when he shot his hunting partner, there was no WMD, and on and on and on. The ignorant trash which comprise the base of the gop will loudly say we are wrong, (not based on any independent research or knowledge, but due to false pride, false patriotism and a warped belief system) and yet time after time we are proven right.

4. I did not mean he "literally" didn't like them....it was not literal.
But it is not sarcasm either, so I can't tag it.

What can I say?

13. I am beginning to agree. Have you noticed...
that the ones who are not running for prez are getting a lot of work done for our country? I think Kerry will be a powerful voice.

I think running for president mutes ones' voice.

5. Hey, Boss. I wouldn't waste a lot of time trying to decipher
Cajun doublespeak from the likes of Carville. Other people don't seem to understand how he & Matalin can survive each other. In my view, it's easy. They're both in the same profession; they just walk different sides of the street. Never forget that Carville sold out the Kerry campaign in Ohio

That is NOT what kicked Dean from the race - I know it and you know it.

Oh wait, that statement makes you wrong, which means, using your logic, you can continue to prowl DC and spread your poison.

And kept quiet for his darling wife...... and Tonya Harding's viability at the next Olympics.

11. it's a huge leap for most
to take an observation from a political insider, especially an observation that has a good deal of truth in it,

and somehow transform that into "hate"....

12. So you agree that being right is not good in DC?
And where did I use the word "hate".

Actually he is right....it was a definite death wish to be against the Iraq war.

Carville is right about a lot of stuff...especially the smoke-filled room, lack of truth attitude in DC. He is part of that culture.

Everyone is afraid to be who they are. The only way they can make a difference is NOT to run. Kerry is doing the right thing, and he will accomplish a lot more than running in this "careful" group.

Dean is accomplishing more NOT running, Gore is also.

So actually baldy is right.

14. you used the word "hate" in your OP
right here:

"That bastard said the same thing about Dean..."right too often". He sure hates people who are right."

---------------

Perhaps it is human nature to resent people who are right too often. You certainly see this in any organization, not just DC. A great many people resent it when they are shown to be wrong. In politics, where anything you say can and will be used against you, it seems that all to often the politician who keeps his/her head down, who doesn't provide a target, comes out on top. That's regrettable, but what is there to be done about it? People are people, with all the frailties that come with that condition, and politicians are no better (and perhaps worse) than most .

20. I used it as hyperbole....
But actually it is a tragic thing to agree with....that to be popular in DC and to survive there you have to vote for such things as invading another country.

Carville on one level is right about DC's corrupt culture. But he has little credibility with me anymore.

I did not really mean it totally literally, but I have to be so careful here and say things exactly right.

I did not really mean he "hates" them.

I really thought my post was not bad, was pretty obvious a little exaggerated, a little sort of sarcastic.

18. It sounds like Carville is making an observation, not an attack
Although it's tough to tell from moment to moment exactly what Carville is saying. But I take from the quote that he's making an observation, and it rings true to me: Being right, especially at the wrong time, is hazardous to one's political life.

In 2002 and 2003, both the dominant powers and their media sycophants wanted war in the worst way (and boy, did they get it!). Bush and his criminal cabal wanted war because they're bloodthirsty greedheads who knew that they could make a lot of money while the fog of war was obscuring the air. The media lapdogs because they're, er, well, greedheads (though not quite as bloodthirsty), who knew that pretty pictures of American armaments exploding are always good for big ratings. Dissenting voices were shouted down by people too blinded to anything but lining their own pockets.

It doesn't mean that the people who argued against the war and demonstrated in the streets against it were wrong; they were just trying to keep a bunch of greedy people away from a great big pile of money. So they had to be crushed. Kerry and Gore, two responsible voices who brought a great deal of perspicacity, experience and wisdom to the table, were mercilessly cut up by the dominant politicos and chewed to pieces by the popular media.

As Adlai Stevenson famously remarked when a woman told him that he had the vote of every thinking person in the country, "I'm afraid that won't be enough, madam. I need a majority." Being smart and right doesn't amount to much in a culture like Washington which values being loud and demagogic far more.

19. But it is a little different when it is about war and life and death.
I would give him more leeway if he had not recently unleashed a couple of efforts to discredit Dean as chairman.

Comparing Dean with Rumsfeld was way too far over the line, and then claiming he was not being told by Rahm and the Clintons to stop it....was just too much.

He carries little credibility with me.

When we play political games with war and invasions of other countries then it is not ok to speak lightly of it.

21. Carville is all wet
(as you well know)

Howard Dean’s accurate assessment about the failure of the war in Iraq helped kick him out of the running for president despite his passion, Carville said.

Baloney. Few knew, when Dean was pushed out, that he was going to be right about Iraq. Well, his supporters figured it, but no one KNEW.

What a self-important ass.

25. On face value there is something to be said about his comment that
those in power in DC do not like it when people are right.
Just look at the people who have been right about the war--about investigations, about the enviroment. etc etc.

Check out the article mentioned here:

It's amazing how well these moderate-liberals pundits have done after backing this war. DC is one of the few cities that constantly rewards incompetence and lack of foresight.
