Attorney: "Libby Sacrificed to Protect Rove"

Thursday 25 January 2007
Karl Rove's criminal exposure in the leak of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson was so extensive that the White House feared it could cost Republicans the presidential election in 2004. So administration officials sacrificed one of their senior cabinet members and set him up to be the fall guy for the leak in order to protect Rove, "the lifeblood of the Republican party" and the White House's senior political adviser.

That was how defense attorney Theodore Wells characterized the dramatic turn of events inside the White House in the days and months following the Plame leak, and it is the primary reason, he claims, that his client, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, was indicted for perjury, obstruction of justice and lying to the FBI about how he discovered Plame was employed by the CIA and whether he shared that information with reporters.

1. K&R - might explain what happened last year when Rove's indictment...
...seemed imminent (as reported by BOTH Jason Leopold AND NBC's David Shuster).

7. Not seemed imminent,
a done deal. Leopold said the indictment was handed down on May 12, 2006.

2. "the lifeblood of the Republican party"
Yeah, he didn't do so well last election, did he?

Don't you love it when they feed on their own? So much for truth, justice, and the American way.

3. Well, we see how well that loyalty thing works in the Bush administration.
You have to be at a certain level to deserve any loyalty, and if you aren't one of the anointed, then no matter how loyal YOU are, the administration will throw you to the wolves in a heartbeat.

9. Well, Leopold's report summarizes well exactly what happened at the trial
Edited on Sat Jan-27-07 11:34 AM by emulatorloo
and quotes several named sources. It is about the most cogent summary I have seen of Wells and Fitz opening arguments. David Schuster of MSNBC has done excelletn reporting on the case. Firedoglake blog has been doing live blogging of the trial. Leopold's article jibes with everything else I have read and is a well done summary. Sorry you don't find it useful.

8. Well, Libby probably was a fall guy, but he and all the others were
in the middle of all of it. Libby was dead center because Darth Cheney was front and center. And Libby is Cheney's chattel.
