New energy plan protects US from hostile regimes: Bush

1 hour, 7 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush defended his newly announced
plan to increase US energy security and independence, saying the plan would
protect the country from enemy governments and terrorists.

In his weekly radio address, Bush reiterated the key themes of the new plan he
announced Tuesday, including steps to double the nation's strategic oil reserve
and boost the supply and consumption of renewable fuels such as ethanol.

"Our nation's dependence on oil leaves us vulnerable to hostile regimes and
terrorists who can hurt our economy by disrupting our oil supply," he said Saturday.

Bush said he wants Congress to pass legislation setting mandatory fuel requirements
that would result in quintupling the current consumption of renewable and alternative
fuels to 35 billion gallons (133 billion liters) by 2017.

Again, Bush emphasizes securing the fuel supply through production
while making brief mentions of conservation and global warming.

2. WTF? We'll have to IMPORT ethanol. Great fix that is!
DAVOS, Switzerland — U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman said the U.S. will need more imports of ethanol to meet President Bush's mandate to cut gasoline use.

Speaking to Dow Jones Newswires at the World Economic Forum, Bodman also said he does not see a 51-cent-a-gallon subsidy to U.S. farmers remaining in place beyond 2010 or an import tariff of 54 cents a gallon on ethanol beyond 2008.

"The idea is that at some point in the future all these technologies need to stand the test of the free market," Bodman said.

Bodman's comments follow Bush's State of the Union speech Tuesday night, in which he offered a blueprint he said would lead toward U.S. energy security and independence. Houston Chronicle
