He easily escaped any attempt to make him look bad by holding him responsible for what he said with garbage like "I won't lie and say my faith won't influence my decisions. Of course it will" (without saying that this meant he was going to force Christianity on America) and "I wasn't putting down a gay man--I was just saying our society has changed in terms of what we discuss openly in public today."
Russert should have held his feet to the fire. Ask him:
"When you say your Christian faith will influence your decisions, how do you plan to do that while still being president of a country full of many people who are NOT Christians? What do you plan to do to keep them part of America--or do you?"
"The parallel construction of your 'from Leave It to Beaver to Beavis and Butthead, from Barney Fife to Barney Frank' construction implies that this society has gone from a world of loving, wholesome families to a society of immaturity, crudeness and profanity--from a world of bumbling but well-intentioned law and order to a world in which an openly gay man holds public office. Obviously you're creating a contrast between a positive and a negative in the first instance. Are you trying to do the same in the second?"
And, if he stammered out a response to the second like "Um, no, I was just saying that our modern society is much more OPEN now than it used to be," keep at it: "But aren't you implying that openness is bad, and the past is preferable? Aren't you saying we'd be better off in a world of Beaver Cleavers and Barney Fifes than in a world of Beavises, Buttheads and Barney Franks? And are you comparing Barney Frank to Beavis and Butthead? Are you saying he's immature, crude and profane just because he's openly gay?"
on edit: Oh, and one more thing: Tim should give that tie back to Barack Obama. He's probably looking for it and can't figure out where it went.
