So Republicans Have to Be Desperate
They put themselves behind the 8 Ball in 2006. They have to still be behind the 8 Ball in 2008, I think and I hope.

I've noticed some renewed vigor in the effort to hype President Reagan.

I lived through the Reagan years. It wasn't so great. He took over where Carter left off, trying to force a huge recession to break inflation. Tight money polcies were a bust. While the Soviet Union did indeed fall, it is a reach to attribute that fall to Reagan's rhetoric. It is a huge reach, and it's an even greater reach to attribute Clinton's successful management of the economy to Reagan.

I think it's fair to say that we'll see an equal attempt to rehabilitate George W. Bush in the years to come.

1. "Rehabilitate George W. Bush" ?
Oh, jeez...surely that's a trick that can't be done. He's worse than Nixon, worse than Hoover, worse than Harding. Might as well try to rehabilitate Benito Mussolini.

2. Of course you're preaching to the choir here.
There are still a fair number of true believers. They believe that people like us and Democrats, generally, want us to lose in Iraq. They believe that it is our plan to regain power. They still believe we're actually "winning". Believe it or not, some actually believe that time in and of itself will vindicate George W. Bush and we will assume a different view of "Mission Accomplished," I guess.

Strange, but true. Would you like some links?

3. Republicans are running scared
at this point. They knew in the last elections because of a combination of their own mis-management of the senate & congress & GW. This time the do not run either house. But GW is still tarnishing their image. So they will have to dig Reagan up from the grave & align themselves with him. I am sure they are hoping for the democratic party to bring impeachment to the table just to get Bush out of the WH. Many of those he thought were friends will vote against him on that day.

8. The One Thing I Give Reagan Credit for
is allowing Gorbachev to make peace and start to disarm/ There were a very strong neocon element in the GOP that wanted to refuse any and all deals and keep the Cold War going. This was by no means a small accomplishment, and it was his popularity and persuasiveness that allowed it to succeed.

9. Yes, I agree.
He had the good sense to keep the neocons and the Religious Right in their places.
