have presidential candidates ever picked a VP to run with them during the primaries?
i've wondered whether any candidate might be helped (or hurt) by announcing that they were running as a slate. has this ever happened?

I suppose that some candidates might later choose a primary opponent as a VP pick (e.g. Kerry/Edwards) but wondered whether a deadly duo might be more effective than a candidate running on their own.

any ideas on this?

1. no. It would be unseemly and arrogant to do so.

3. Bush announced his cabinet early
in order to assure the public that he would have a good
administration. I cannot remember how early.

4. From what I hear....
(in particular from Edwards' supporters) it doesn't much matter, because people don't vote for VP, so I fail to see the advantage in doing this!

8. perhaps they say that
because Edwards was Kerry's second choice, McCain having declined his overture.

11. Imagine how he must've felt
playing second fiddle to McCain, a Republican no less. That would've messed me up for over a week, once I found out.

5. It's been done at the convention before the nomination was decided.
Wallace agreed to be Humphry's vp in 72. That is what finally put McGovern over the top. I think with all the states moving their primaries up, something like that might be possible.

6. I may be remembering wrong...
but I think Reagan chose a running-mate when he was running in the primary against Ford in 1976. His choice was a far more liberal Republican than himself called Schweiker IIRC.

12. He announced he was picking Sweiker if he beat Frod for the nomination....
but, at the convention Ford won the nomination after all.
