It's pretty obvious to me that there are only two ways to end this war anytime soon
Choice 1: Democrats can stop the funding. Okay, this is a toughie. If we stop the funding and the war fails, which it's going to do regardless, then Democrats will be blamed for the failure in Iraq. Let's face it. It's very questionable if our Democratic majority is going to risk their comfortable careers by taking the fall for Bush's war. They SHOULD do it, but I just don't think that they WILL stop the funding.

Choice 2: Impeachment. For the life of me I just can't understand why anyone here still opposes impeachment of Bush unless you happen to like the guy or something. For those of you who think we can't impeach and take care of other important business at hand at the same time, then that's like saying we can't walk and chew gum at the same time. Impeachment isn't just about getting even or or only about accountability. It can also be about getting this war ended. Impeach Bush for lying us into a war and the war just might end because Bush would probably resign with the remote threat of conviction hanging over his head. Even if the threat of conviction is remote, that remote threat alone would be enough to make him run for cover, just like he did when he went AWOL in 1972.

If the Democrats don't end the war by taking Choice 1, which I don't think they'll do, then there is only one other way to end it...Choice #2. Impeach the fucker. AFAIC, that's the easiest way for our Democrats to end the war and come out of this looking like gold. Why settle for chicken when you can go for lobster. If we don't cut off funds, then impeachment is the only way to go, and we have more than enough votes in the House to do so. Whatever choice they make, it's time to stop being nice guys. We're in the drivers seats, and if we don't take advantage, then what the hell was the election in 2006 all for?

here's the long version of what you wrote in the OP: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3085494&mesg_id=3085494

the last three paragraphs arrive at the same conclusion you did. the Dems are not likely to cutoff funds so impeachment via investigations is the only way to stop the war. telling bush to do it "before he leaves office in 2009" is worth absolutely ZERO ... bush is NEVER going to leave Iraq without being forced to do so.

2. But wait! A local opinion column (Indy) has another option :
... one of the brilliant Hoosier minds :freak: who wrote in suggested ...

"remove all the troops immediately, then level Baghdad"

Love the "compassion" these conservatives have, eh? :spank:

3. It's happening too fast, mtnsnake.
I hope I'm wrong . . . but there's not enough time for either option to work. They can bomb Iran any day.

This is a constitutional crisis. Congress, if they had the stones to act, could remove him from power. But the corporate media has a stranglehold on truth getting out . . . and that impedes the Congress' effectiveness, even if they could get it together and do their jobs.

Again . . . I hope I'm wrong.

6. How about a variation of No. 1?
Redirect funds for Bush's war to veteran support and rehabilitation. Real support. Allocate funds for medical and mental health, and education and retraining. Make sure they really do have the body armor and equipment appropriate for their mission. Emphasize the need to care for our vets and point out that they have been neglected so far. This should have been done anyway; why it wasn't is something I'll never understand. Make this funding the No. 1 priority. Slap the American people with this hard and often. Let the Repubs try to argue against this in their blind support for all things BushCo.

Then No. 2 might be a tad easier to achieve...

8. That is beautiful!
Redirect funds for Bush's war to veteran support and rehabilitation

That's the kind of thinking we need more of. Not only are you finding a way to end the war, but you're coming up with an alternative that makes it difficult to argue against without looking un-American. You've found a great way to cut off funds for the war, while maintaining support for the troops. Get your message to Congress, KansDem!
