Q+A: Bill Richardson
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 01:32 PM by bigtree
In a 30-minute interview with the Sun, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations showed himself to be one part diplomat, one part cowboy - and maybe one part colorful linguist, though that part was mostly off the record:

Gov. Richardson:

"I know I'm an underdog, but I've only been in the race for five days. I agree that I have to have a strong showing here. Do I have to win? I'm not sure. Yes, I'm concentrating on Nevada right now, but I'm not a regional candidate. I'm using the West as my base because I'm a Westerner. I believe the American people are ready for candidates with solutions. They're ready for candidates who will inspire them. They have shown that they're ready to accept a woman for president, an African American for president - and hopefully a Hispanic for president."

1. He and his wife are from Boston!
"I'm using the West as my base because I'm a Westerner."

Bill Richardson

When New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson speaks about embracing diversity,
the American dream, and serving others, he speaks from unparalleled experience.

Born November 15, 1947 in Pasadena, California to an American father and Mexican mother,
Governor Richardson grew up in Mexico City before moving to New England,
where he attended high school and college.

That would be 8 years on the east coast!
Plus he taught at Harvard for a time.
It doesn't say for how long, though.

But I guess he's from the west now!

2. But how long has he lived out West? He's in his late 50s now,
so he may have spent over 20 years out there, compared to the 8 back East.

3. he was a NM congressman for 14+ years
there are more than enough folks in his state and in the west who are more than willing to accept the Guv as a true westerner.

I'm glad he's lived, studied, and worked outside of his state, including service for the nation in Washington.

4. My sort of point is...
that a lot of people have and still are after W for being born in CT and schooled in MA
and summering in ME...if you get my drift. And they still don't accept him as a Texan.
I was playing the devil's advocate, in a way. I like Richardson, on some issue's.
Especially his work in Darfur.
