Wesley Clark mentioned on teevee (not Faux) in context of possible 08ers
I agree with those who always say Wesley Clark gets short shrift from the media. It happened while he was running in 03 and he's hardly ever mentioned in any reports of possible 08 candidates. Yes, he is sometimes mentioned, but not very much. His popularity and noteriety seems, indeed, mostly to be on the Internet right now.

So imagine my surprize when he was mentioned in a discussion of fundraising and 08 candidates that was on MSNBC earlier today.

I don't know who the guy was who mentioned him ....... some generic 'Internet/Netroots/Blogosphere expert'.

The airhea ..... er ..... hostess who was engaged in the questioning of this guy was steering the discussion to how people low in the polls or not yet in the race might get some buzz going, and through that, some bucks. The 'expert' went on to recount how Brownback and Dodd are doing some things. How Vilsack is using the 'net pretty effectively ...... blah blah blah .....

So, as soon as he mentions some Dems, the airhe .... er ..... anchor (hahahaha) tries to steer him back to the Republic candidates, mentioning Brownback again. But the guy clearly had other ideas. He just went right on talking, saying how the person making the most effective use of the Internet, right now, is Clark. He sai that Clark is hugely popular on the Internet, and that if he decides to run, there's a big likelihood that his 'net support will propel larger buzz - and get him a lot of donations, too.

Anyhow, this is grossly (and hopefully not toooooo badly) paraphrased, but that was the gist of it. This guy says Clark will be the new Dean, at least with respect to effective Internet, small-donation fundraising.

Whether this is true or not, whether Clark runs or not, it was odd to see him mentioned and hilarious to see how the front person for the corporate media seemed to blanch when this guest mentioned Clark.

1. Clark will run.
I've got a good friend here who headed Clark's staff in Tennessee/Mississippi last time.

He has sworn to me that Clark will run, and that they are developing/have developed a strategy to make him viable in the southern states.

6. I saw Gen. Clark in the Memphis airport Friday evening.
I called out his name and without hesitation he walked toward me. I told him I did not want to delay him but just wanted to thank him and to encourage him to stay in the political arena. He was very nice, very approachable and very good looking.

The fact that he was traveling alone without any handlers suggests to me that he is probably not planning to get in this race.

After I spoke with him one of the female ticket agents asked me who he was. Before I could answer the other agent said "He has to be a movie star. He is a movie star isn't he?" The other agent checked their flight roster to see if he was on the celebrity list - no. We had a good conversation about General Clark and they were all in a twitter.

12. He is fantastic, isn't he?
I can't wait for him to spend time with my kids again! He was always so fantastic to take time out for my son when he saw him at various events - that thrilled my son to no end.

This time, Clark will have my little girl to show the ropes to - not that she'll care. She'll only be a few months old (she's due in June), but she'll be born a Clarkie!

20. Yep, just a regular guy...
He even shops for his own luggage at the neighborhood mall....but, of course, because he doesn't go trying to convince everybody how regular he is, we'd never know if it weren't for the Clarkie working at the mall that day who saw and spoke to him....

26. General Clark almost always travels alone
Doesn't need a bevy of courtiers to wait on him. So it's NOT an indication of anything, just vintage Wes Clark.

A quick story:

Richardson and Clark were in Nevada this weekend, at the Douglas Co Dem club's Annual dinner.

Richardson showed up with a flock of 12 handlers. Clark was there alone (except for native Nevadan Clarkies).

Clark spoke first (notice I said 'spoke' not 'read his speech'). By all accounts, the audience applauded and cheered, hooted and hollered in support for his ideas, and there were calls of “Run Wes, Run.”

After WKC spoke, there was a pause while arrangements were made for a teleprompter for Gov. Richardson. On exiting the stage, Gov. Richardson was overheard to his aides, "Remind me never to follow Wes Clark in a speech again."

:applause: :woohoo:

33. He actually said it jokingly aloud
As sort-of an opener, before kicking off his "real" speech. But he did say it aloud; loud enough for me to hear it clearly! Plus, as he was saying it with a broad grin (and amusement from the audience) he also did glance over to his left at the table, right where his Reno/Sparks/Carson area campaign manager was sitting... Hehe.

In that same initial phase of "warm-up words", and recognizing the General (just as the General did in his speech) Richardson also provided another anecdotal nugget involving him and the General. They had met many years ago in Panama (I believe while the General was heading SouthCom) and some years later, while Richardson was on a diplomatic mission in former Yugoslavia during the crisis there (I don't recall him mentioning a specific year or place) he was warned by the Administration back in DC that if fighting erupted in that area, he'd be without a flight back. Trouble did break out, so he was sorta trapped. As it turned out, the General -- at that time SACEUR in Brussels -- sent over a plane to have Richardson picked up. Richardson rounded off the anecdote thanking the General (seated a few yards in front of him, to his right) for getting him out of trouble... And of course, the audience loved that, too. And so did a broadly grinning Wes Clark!

It was really a great evening. The General hit it out of the park before a full house at the Turn Nevada Blue Dinner in Douglas Co! And that's in no small part due to the hard work of Cindy.

You're so right about Clark being ignored by the media. I was going to say, "It looks like Clark will be ignored AGAIN" because when the Dem. guy mentioned Clark and how he'd be able to raise money easily, the airhea...hostess totally ignored him and said something like, "But let's talk about Edwards..." (or someone other than Clark). I don't understand why the media seems so interested in a Dem. military/brilliant possible candidate like him!

15. That is what is odd, how deliberate the media blackout has been.....
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 05:37 PM by FrenchieCat
Considering the news, the world and the times.....just seems odd that a Peace negotiating war winning diplomat and first and only progressive 4 star General would not be discussed. Considering that he's the most decorated officer since Eisenhower; that this election is the closest to the one in 1952 in where Eisenhower won without any ever having served office (also no incumbents were running from either parties; the unpopular Korean war was raging...accounting for terrible numbers for Truman).....Yet, no "analysis" of this anywhere on the Teevee or in corp. print media.

C. Matthews said that the Dems needed a military Eisenhower......to which the pundit dickheads on his show made no comment last week.

Maybe he could generate some buzz by building a large presidential looking compound?

I made a few others, too...

With these theres just a few differences in border/no border, red/blue, etc. I have plans to make other ones that are a lot bigger but waiting on an announcement from Clark first. If you want to use any of my designs other than here (like on a website or blog, etc.) just give me plug on the site somewhere. I have some little banners for that that can just go in a Link section or something with the url ( http://mytwowings.tripod.com )...

The one I'm using I think is a lot better than these other ones though. I'm working on some variations of it but not quite sure what to do with it (little bitty banners are so much harder just because they're tiny).

38. Clark did his service for Democrats at FOX, he walked the walk
Clark always urged his supporters to challange the Republican Noise Machine directly, to call them out in their own media, and when the time came he did just that himself.

Clark more than put in his time in that regard, and I think Democrats in those red states and districts appreciated him delivering Democratic talking points effectively on FOX. But it's time now for Clark to move on and speak to a broader spectrum of Americans and not be tied to a single network. I really look forward to this next phase.
