Hagel may run; Hagel may write
BY JAKE THOMPSON
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU
WASHINGTON - Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., who is weighing a 2008 presidential bid, has met with several publishers about a possible book deal.
No deal has been signed, no book has been written and the two-term lawmaker, who grabbed national headlines criticizing President Bush's troop buildup in Iraq, has not been shopping around a proposal, spokesman Mike Buttry said Monday.
Since 2004, publishers have approached Hagel about writing a book, Buttry said, adding, "It is something he's considering."
The topic of the volume, Buttry said, would be determined "if he decides to do a book."
Hagel last week sat down to discuss the issue with several publishers in New York City. No time frame has been set for when a book might be published, Buttry said.

He said Hagel's book prospects are not connected to his potential presidential campaign. Hagel has said he will decide soon whether to join an already large field of 2008 presidential candidates.
A number of candidates have written or co-authored autobiographies and books about their ideas in recent presidential campaigns. Such books can help promote candidates' views, boost their national profiles and build grass-roots support.
