Biden....Sec State?
I was just thinking about this and I realize it is straight out of the West Wing.

A lot of people on this board would hate to have Joe Biden as their President, but if there is one thing that people respect is his foreign policy experience. So, how would people feel if a democrat won the presidency and chose nominated Biden as their Secretary of State. Remember, this is purely a What if type of thing.

1. Actually it wouldn't be that bad of a choice
and Delaware has a democratic governor so his seat will be safe for the democrats

2. It's a GREAT idea...as log as the Dems have a large enough
majority to withstand losing a Senator! I sure odn't want to give up control of the Senate, even if the best candidate...no matter what position, would be a great choice.

3. Curious. What in his foreign policy experience deserves respect?
I think this is one of those pieces of recieved wisdom that no one really investigates.

"Biden: He's strong on foreign policy."

Didn't this clown vote for the Iraq war?

In any case, he already shot himself down with Obama comment.

17. No one really says why he's strong
He ACTS strong and huffs and puffs and then eventually capitulates. That's what he did with Iraq.

I don't trust him. He has a neo-imperialist foreign policy.

6. Bullshit
I was all over Bill when he golfed at that whites only club. This, however, is far worse. Hairplug Joe is a disgrace.

8. Do they still have clubs like that?
I wasn't aware that Bill did that. Amazed in fact and would want to know if he knew or the context. I would condem him as well, but I agree it's different and worse.

12. It happened in 92, just before the Wisconsin primary
Jerry Brown tried to make an issue of it, but he still got his ass handed to him.

9. Already spoken to OBama
I think this is just more of the media making something out of nothing. He has already put out a statement saying that he talked to obama and Obama understands what he meant.
Second, what was wrong with what he said? Obama is one of if not the first mainstream African American candidates who actually has a shot to be President

7. Bill Clinton would never be this ignorant and disrespectful
Never.

and FWIW I was Biden neutral until today. It is a statement that reveals much about his inner predjudices and complete insensitivity to what is appropriate.

Secretary of State is supposed to be diplomatic. Commending Obama for being the First Clean Articulate African American is not diplomatic.

16. Exactly what I thought
I ask everybody if they would have reacted the same way if Bill Clinton had said what Biden did. Instead of simply saying yes, everyone decides to say that Bill Clinton would NEVER say that. I wasnt asking if he would say that, but IF (hypothetically) he did, how would you react.

If this where Bill, people here wouldnt care at all.

21. Bill Clinton would never say something this ignorant and insensitive

But if he did, I'd be all over him, too.

In 1992, Bill Clinton was caught on camera right after being told (inaccurately, it turned out) that Jesse Jackson had decided to endorse another candidate in the New York primary. Clinton went off - he was furious! As I watched this, I held my breath - I didn't know much about Clinton at the time, but was terrified that this Southern governor, in his anger at Jackson, was going to "show his true colors" and say something racist. But as mad as he was and as hard as bitched about Jackson, he never once went there. I was really impressed - here was a man who had lost his temper about what he thought was a low blow by a black politician, yet he never once even mentioned his race or uttered anything the least bit racially insensitive. In other word, in his most unguarded moment, Bill Clinton treated Jesse Jackson like what he was - just a fellow man.

Needless to say, I was REALLY impressed.

And, by the way, I don't hate Biden.

22. First, I don't see BC saying anything so stupid and insensitive. Second, BC gets plenty of criticism
here and in progressive circles.

Anyone saying something as insensitive and stupid (not to mention politically tone deaf) as what Biden said deserves the criticism that Biden is getting.

11. That would be fine with me
I've been a somewhat lukewarm fan of Senator Biden for quite a while. He would be a quantum leap improvement to the trash that is in that seat now. Per Senator Biden's comments about Senator Obama. They are the same as Senator Kerry's comments about "if you are dumb, you go to Iraq." Right wing haters are on alert 24/7 to misconstrue anything a dem says about anything. Its masturbatory material for trash who listen to limbaugh and post on free republic. Wouldn't it be great if they took a moment of introspection and realize they have duped by their heros for years?

14. There's a major difference between Kerry's and Biden's
Kerry left out a pronoun in a speech where the joke was in the released to the press speech. It did no reflect at all on Kerry's character or his values - everybody flubs a line some time or other. It was twisted in a way that defies logic.

Biden said what he said. I don't think he is racist, but he clearly was mean spirited in attacking all the Democrats running. He was not reading a joke written for him.

19. How can I possibly respect the foreign policy "experience" of a man who would suggest
Edited on Wed Jan-31-07 09:45 PM by Clarkie1
that the U.S. should and can divide Iraq into a tripartite state? Just what kind of experience has Biden had that would lead him to make such an inane suggestion?

Wesley Clark, the retired general who is also mulling a presidential bid also told me that while partitioning may eventually occur, or already be happening, in Iraq, it could never be official United States policy.

The problem, he said, is that Iraqis forced to move out from their homes or from the more mixed urban areas like Baghdad or Kirkuk to the strongholds of their respective ethnic or religious group will associate their displacement with the United States. Clark said that feeling will breed even more resentment towards America.

"'Bush did this to me,' That's what they'll say," said Mr. Clark. "Bush drove me out of my home. Or they will name some Democratic Senator. It could come to that but it can't be what we want."
