Vilsack raises $1.1M for 2008 campaign
DES MOINES, Iowa - Democratic presidential candidate Tom Vilsack raised more than $1.1 million in the last seven weeks of 2006, a total that puts him far behind deep-pocketed rivals for the nomination.

Vilsack, one of the first candidates to enter the race on Nov. 9, boasted that his fundraising amount was double what Sen. John Kerry and Howard Dean raised in the same stretch in the 2003-04 election cycle.

In this campaign, however, Democrats Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record) can easily raise vast sums quickly, increasing expectations for other candidates. Clinton has more than $14 million in the bank from her Senate campaign — money she can use for a White House bid — and her advisers have not disputed estimates that she will raise $100 million or more before the year is out.

1. SO?
I feel for our democracy when the focus of an election race becomes money which appears to be more important than the issues. To give Vilsack coverage for this and not much else is really telling!

I don't support Vilsack....but it is a shame how it is precisely the fact that the corporate news media give their choice candidates a bunch of free media which in terms provides them with the buzz that many times leads to fundraising jackpots.......

2. You're right that money shouldn't be so determinative, but the point of posting this article...
...is to show that he is raising money and that could make him competitive. This isn't a debate about the morality of fundraising in campaigns. The point of this is who will be relevant in the campaign, regardless of the reason they're relevant and regardless of whether that reason is right or wrong.
