Clark Supporters: Please check in here
Okay, slow down, people.

What we know:

Gert introduced Wes last night as the next POTUS. Wes did not say he was staying in or leaving the race in his speech. We saw Wes in the crowd say he would try everything he could to stay in and that they were going to talk about it today and reach a decision. We have heard there is disagreement between the family and campaign staff over whether or not he should drop out. Matt Bennett last night announced Clark has decided to back out and will announce it today on CNN. We have read that much of the Clark campaign staff was in the hotel bar and taken completely by surprise when Bennett's news came on the television. We also heard that a "mistake" may have been made in that the announcement came before a decision was reached. This afternoon, we get word that Clark's announcement may reverse Matt Bennett's announcement of last night.

Other than that, we know nothing. We'll hear from the man's own mouth in an hour or so. Let's please give him a respectful hearing and accept his decision either way.

9. I'm not specifically a Clark supporter
but I hope to God he stays in the race. He is a great man and candidate and has done much to re-invigorate our party. I hope all the candidates stay in for as long as possible. Good luck to Mr. Clark and all his supporters. When it comes to the 2004 primaries, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

16. I thought he still had a fighting chance, so I'll wait to hear
what he says today.

Still think, if he does drop out, that he'd be a good VP for Kerry. That way, his statement that "national security has to be at the top of the ticket" would still fit. And in 8 years, we get a really good president.

but Ross Perot did an "in and out" in 1992 (although it was over a longer peoiod of time), and he looked foolish.

I realize that Clark didn't announce it last night himself, and I think that, in and of itself, might have been a mistake. I don't like the way this is playing out and how it makes Gen. Clark or his campaign look. I don't understand how Bennett could walk out and just throw down an announcement like that without Clark being there to graciously concede. It just isn't making sense to me.

I wish Gen. Clark could remain in the race, but I'm not the one working as hard as he and the campaigners are, with long, long hours, and many personal sacrifices. I'm also worried about the right-wing attacks we're already starting to hear about Kerry, his service "record", marrying wealthy, etc, and how that is going to effect the electorate. I'm frustrated that they will smear Kerry enough and too much will "stick" in the minds of the voters.

Sigh.

On edit: I'll work hard (remotely, again) for the campaign, if he decides to stay in.

27. That's the way I feel about it too. If we're going to have
someone with military experience in the race, why on earth vote for Kerry over Clark?

I support Dean, but that's the way I see it. And I've had it with the dirt of "inside the beltway" politics.

49. Still here--Still standing.
This has been a hell of a ride in the last 24 hours. Frankly, I think Bennett set him up for this and I hope Bennett and Lahane both get the big old army boot...

I saw Clark on CSPAN last night worrying about a supporter who was in the crowd crying when he gave his address. He told somebody from the campaign to go get her and then gave her a big hug and told her they were gonna be ok--not to worry. THAT is not the kind of guy that sends a campaign staffer out to break the news to the campaign and the rest of the world, that the race is over. Clark has WAY more sand than that.

This whole mess reeks, and I hope to heck the General stands strong!

Laura
