Associated Press & Reuters AWOL on Coulter calling John Edwards a 'faggot,' neither reports on outrage
by John Aravosis

UPDATE: Editor & Publisher notes that the Washington Post is also refusing to cover this story.

UPDATE: Not only does the New York Times story about the conference NOT mention what Coulter did, but the story DOES mention Coulter's speech generally, and how it was apparently THE BIG DRAW of the entire conference. In other words, the most anticipated speech of the entire day was the one in which the speaker called John Edwards a 'faggot,' and the mainstream media thinks this isn't newsworthy. But it is newsworthy to mention Coulter's speech generally and how important it was to the attendees. Nice.

Apparently it's no longer news to the Associated Press and Reuters that a lead conservative voice at THE lead conservative conference, a conference attended by all the GOP presidential candidates (save John McCain) and even the vice president himself, publicly called a lead Democratic presidential candidate a "faggot." And it's not news that the lead gay and lesbian civil rights group in America, and the head of the Democratic party, have called on the GOP candidatees, and the veep, to condemn her hateful comments. No, no story there. But I do hear that Anna Nicole Smith is still dead and Britney shaved her head. Oooh, how exciting.

I don't even need to make the comparisons to whether the Associated Press, Reuters and the rest of the mainstream media would find it newsworthy if Michael Moore or Barbra Streisand, attending the lead Democratic political conference, called a leading Republican presidential candidate the n-word, or a slur for Jews, or Latinos, or any other minority. Hell, the mainstream media was all over the story that Barbra Streisand told some heckler to go shove it - yes, that was apparently news - but a top conservative voice publicly calling a top Democrat a "faggot" at the most important annual meeting of the GOP base, in a month that the word faggot and anti-gay bias has been in the news repeatedly, no, that ain't news.

One of our commenters put it best:

Edwards/Kerry state the truth - that Mary Cheney is a lesbian - and all hell breaks loose.

Coulter calls Edwards a faggot.

Pathetic.

1. I think the entire
MSM should ignore it. The only way to deal with people like her is the same way you deal with internet troll...use the ignore feature...stop giving them the payout.

4. I would almost agree if they'd stop giving her ink or credence. But
they don't. When she's mentioned in a positive light in these articles that don't tell the truth about what she said, that's going over the line imo. Just like she did.

12. That's like advising John Kerry to ignore the Swift Boat Liars so they
Edited on Sat Mar-03-07 02:19 PM by tblue37
won't get the attention they want. Like the Swift Liars, Ann WILL get all the attention she wants, all of it positive, no matter what we do. We must at least try to balance that by responding quickly and fiercely about such outrages, so that at least some of the truth might trickle down to the distracted American public.

It is much harder to get our message into the MSM, but if we press relentlessly enough it does get in a bit. Think of the Clinton War Room, based on the idea that a scurrilious attack or a lie should not be allowed to stand for even a single news cycle without a powerful response.

The advice to ignore Ann is just plain wrong. It's like saying no one should have finally called out Joe MCarthy.

15. It's not exactly advice
Edited on Sat Mar-03-07 06:00 PM by Epiphany4z
its more of a wish...The ignore feature often doesn't work with trolls either..because it requires everyone do it and inevitably someone has to pipe up and feed the troll.

I just get so sick of the week long Ann said something mean coverages...she does this over and over and over again and only gets better book sales for it. She knows the formula and uses it well.

MSM has to stop acting like she is a reputable source of anything other than shit...but my money says that is not what is going to happen...she will come out the poor victim of the mean hateful liberals.

13. LOL! That didn't work very well last time Nazis were ignored.
Can their be any additional proof needed that these media institutions are just corrupt, rotting shells of journalism, honesty and fairness? Even Orwell's vision of Newspeak is tame compared to the media in America at the start of the 21st century.

It is not an accident or an oversight that these "news" organizations didn't report accurately or at all in regard to Coulter. It was a conscious decision that was made in one office or several. The result is the same. American media has a script and they must follow it.

14. Uh - that is beside the point here.
As BabylonSister points out - the Coulter speech was covered but they left out the part where she called Edwards a faggot. The issue isn't should Coulter be ignored, of course she should, she is a hatemongering idiot with nothing of interest to say. The issue is if she is being covered why is her calling Edwards a faggot ignored? Why is every sigh of Al Gore deemed newsworthy? Why is his electric bill a Major Scandal? Why is the size of John Edwards house a major media issue? Why was an over exuberant speech by Dr. Dean the campaign ending Talk of The Nation for weeks back in 2004?

When are we going to get a clue that this is not a democratic republic of free men and women but a kleptocracy run by and for a small group of elites, that we have but a charade of democracy and not even a good charade at that?

No, ignoring the hateful rhetoric of the right is not going to help. Bringing that nasty business our into the glaring light of the public dialog is the only way to get rid of a nasty rash of fascism like we have growing here.

2. How it must feel to be a Log Cabin Republican These days
Overt gay bashing, discriminatory constitutional amendments, and the only visible gay republicans are Mark Foley, Jeff Gannon, and Ted Haggard. (OK, Mary Cheney, but they only bring her out during election years).

11. They don't get it.
This guy I grew up with in Massachusetts is a Log Cabin repuke. We were close when we were younger, but he's rabid Republicanism has driven us apart. That, and his rabid drinking, which I'm sure is the only way he can live with himself subconsciously.

3. Gee, does WAPO still have a lame ombudsman? Maybe a letter writing campaign
should be started up, and then KO and Jon Stewart could cover it--they disseminate more news than anyone else, anyway....

8. If Al Gore had said that all those Republic papers would be dancing
in delight all pushing and shoving to get the "News" out first and TV personalities hiring folks to interview and prolonging the interest for a week! The fact that Gore's film won the Academy Award would make no difference...in fact it would give them even more impetus to tare him down. Just goes to show the difference between Rethugs and Democrats.

9. And CSPAN cut out her speech in the replay last night.
No idea why they did, but it seemed very suspicious to me.

There's certainly some scrubbing going on even though the video is already out in the wild.

10. AP has been absent since before 2000. You should hear their radio shorts.
AAR carries it in Seattle, and it is remarkable for its shallow content and bias in the rare times it is forced to carry substance. And the voices have a cadence you would expect from a kiddie show.
