BushCo Slaughters Sacred Cow
BushCo Slaughters Sacred Cow
By Nancy Greggs

Over the past few years, as the crimes of this Administration have been slowly but steadily exposed, millions of American citizens have wondered what the tipping point would be – that long-awaited moment when they did something so vile, so heinous, so inhuman, their own last diehard supporters would turn against them in a wave of unprecedented disgust.

With the exposure of the conditions at Walter Reed Hospital, I think we’ve hit that point – and then some. The tip of this particular iceberg will, in all probability, be the disaster that sinks the Bad Ship BushCo. And when the true size and nature of that iceberg slowly rises above the surface of the muddied waters, there won’t be enough lifeboats in the world to save the hapless passengers.

As with all great yarns, there is of course that twist of irony. It was this president and the Republicans themselves who turned our troops into the Sacred Cow, the one group no one could defile, abuse, nor say a word against without being accused of treasonous motives.

“Support the Troops” was the banner which all GOPers waved in the face of anyone who dared question their activities in any other area. It was the smokescreen that obscured all sins, and the shield that protected every outrageous act from scrutiny.

“But WE Support the Troops”. It was a statement yelled from the rooftops every time something unsavory came to light, meant to put an end to any further discussion. And up until now, that tactic invariably worked.

In fact, our troops have been treated miserably by this administration since day one; their pay, pensions and benefits were gutted during the years of Republican control of the House and Senate. They’ve been sent into combat ill-equipped and ill-prepared, thanks to the war machine that requires expediency above safety, along with ensuring a hefty bottom-line for the war profiteers.

And thanks to the compliance of the MSM, the general population has been kept, for the most part, unaware of the true nature of BushCo’s brand of ‘support’ when it comes to our soldiers.

But with the now-emerging details of the conditions under which our returning troops are forced to live, the inadequacy of their care, and the bureaucracy that ensnares them into accepting far less than they are entitled to, the Sacred Cow held up by this president and his supporters as proof of their patriotism, and their loyalty to its defenders, now lies dead in a pool of red blood and red tape.

And there can be no question as to who slaughtered that Sacred Cow – and given its sacredness, the citizenry are not about to accept ignorance of the facts as an excuse for its demise, no less the reasoning that while we spend billions of dollars on the War in Iraq, pennies must be pinched when it comes to caring for the very people who fought that war.

The obvious question to be asked is: How did this Administration, and its attendant GOP toadies, think the true state of affairs would never see the light of day? What made them think they would get away with pouring even more of the taxpayers’ dollars into the pockets of crony-run private companies without getting caught?

The answer there, I think, is part and parcel of BushCo’s favorite but ill-advised answer to everything: “Failure is not an option.”

Just as they never devised a Plan B to deal with an insurgency in Iraq, they never faced the possibility of losing a Republican majority, with its attendant loyalists in office to ensure that certain facts never came to light.

They never foresaw a time when a well-spoken, well-groomed GOP operative wouldn’t be able to smooth over the worst catastrophe by appearing on a couple of Sunday morning talk shows, smiling reassuringly. They never planned for the day that Uncle Dick would be compared to Baghdad Bob – the latter being more believable.

They never took into account the statement that inevitably follows failure not being an option: “Shit happens.” And if you don’t have an option for when it does, you’re screwed.

Call it a pre-November 2006 mindset, a time when a sudden terror alert would get the citizens back in line, a time when it would always be business-as-usual because the Democrats would never be in a position to ask questions and demand answers, pursuant to subpoenas and testimony under oath.

In short, they left themselves no exit strategy – surprise, surprise.

So now the Sacred Cow has had its throat slashed by its own creators, an act meant to have been carried out in secret, and its blood paints the door lintel of the White House itself. How apt in this season of the year – but this time, the Angel of political death is not likely to pass over.

The Sacred Cow that was used for photo-ops, as a backdrop to every lie about the war, as a crutch when the administration was crippled by one scandal or another, is now just a reminder that “Support the Troops”, like every other BushCo/GOP slogan, is just that – a few words on a bumpersticker meant to divert the eye from the slaughter, and the public’s mind from the truth.

Will anyone ever again see a photo of a smiling Bush at the bedside of an injured soldier, and not wonder what conditions are like in the room of the soldier just down the hall? Will anyone ever again hear a Republican talk about supporting the troops, without questioning what he knew, and when he knew it?

I think BushCo and its Republican apologists are about to discover that when it comes to our troops, all the bumperstickers in the world aren’t going to cover up the holes in the walls at Walter Reed, or the holes in the broken system that they themselves not only created, but allowed to flourish.

And the fact that all roads inevitably lead to Halliburton, or a subsidiary thereof, really doesn’t bode well for an administration and a party that has shoveled millions of dollars into the same ever-open pockets on a no-questions-asked basis.

In the end, despite the best professional obfuscation that money can buy, Sacred Cows never die in obscurity. Their carcasses tend to litter the political landscape, and the stench of their remains never goes unnoticed – and their deaths never go unavenged.

1. As I watched
scenes from Alabama this morning, Bush's vacancy from ever showing up at Walter Reed was my first thought. He didn't run down the street to take care of our men and women. He flew to Alabama, trying in vain to repair damage he suffered a year and half ago from NOLA.
Too little too late and in the wrong direction. Bush on the hobby horse, he's riding backwards.

Let us hope and pray this is the tipping point. Some of us are saturated with the evil stench.

They've managed to cover up their hypocrisy in all other things - from Katrina to the sanctioning of torture.

This time, methinks they've stepped over the line. And the American people will FINALLY hold them to account.

bush* could fuck little boys on stage in public, on TV, and they would STILL support him and make excuses for him.

I've said that for years here, and I have never been proven wrong, so far.

Something like OVER 80% of all repukes still LOVE that WAR CRIMINAL!

80%!!!!!

Wrap that around your brain...

They are THAT bad. ALL repukes.

Sorry for the cold water of reality...

A civil war is more likely.

I want a bumper sticker that says:

Do you NOW hate bush* as much as the rest of the world
after this LATEST scandal?

and outright bald-faced lies, the way these crooks have treated the military is an especially outrageous example of why these people must be pried from power. My divinatory insight into what will prove the final attainment of critical mass with Bushco is forever corrupted with a lot of wishful thinking. But if it ever comes, the sickening revelations of this newly-spotlighted scandal could well be the catalyst.

Those of us born during the Fifties have had so many things to be revolted by during successive administrations, but this ranks right up there in the tragic roll-call of government duplicity and malice.

This White House and their Congressional enablers deserve to have their citizenship revoked, and should face extraordinary rendition to the Seventh Circle of Hell. Every one of them.

The disdain shown the troops by the inaction of this admin is criminal. Support the troops? A trite expression to them, as it's turned out.
Thanks, Nance, for your great commentary. The more that is written, blogged, investigated about what's been going on at WR, the better. When I heard about these conditions, and the response from Gen Kiley, I was horrified. I still am, and pray there will be something done to right the inequities. That 'should' start with firing the incompetents, though that should have happened a long time ago.

21. The Best Article to Read is...
"War is a Racket" by General Smedley Butler about his experiences.
Everyone at DU ought to know about this article and pass the info along to all their friends. It can be found at several websites, including this one:
http://lexrex.com/enlightened/articles/warisaracket.htm
While you might think the info is outdated, (from WW1), the same things are happening today; on a far greater scale.

22. There have been so many scandals and each time I have thought this
will be the Bushistas' undoing. So far I have been wrong. I had almost given up hope. However, this time there is the difference that the Dems are in charge finally. I still believe that Rove intended to steal another election, but with the attitude of the country, he had to be careful to keep the margins slim. KKKarl never expected the turnout which defeated his plan. The arrogance of the frog-killer and the meanness of the dick may actually end up being their downfall. It became shocking how after starting out so secretive, these two eventually came right out and destroyed anything in sight publically.

28. Spot on Nance - if this atrocity doesn't tip the scales I'M AFRAID ALL IS LOST.
'Failure is not an option' - 'Support the Troops' - thee MANTRA'S of the GOP are in the process of being destroyed and yet the cries of outrage I hear from the American populace are only rumblings in the distance. Has a large percentage of the population become desensitized by the drivel put out by the MSM? Does being a loyal Republican mean BLIND obedience because you need their cloak of protection to guard you against those who would attack us in our grocery stores if we weren't fighting them 'over there' make all else secondary? Are those of us who truly care about what is happening in and to this country by these Republicons in such a minority that we will find it necessary to 'go with the majority' and be good silent Americans?

This was all brought home to me this weekend as I had a 90 minute or so phone conversation with my soon to be graduating college son. He is so frustrated by the lack of concern and outrage among his fellow students by the both the Walter Reed story and the whole situation in the Middle East. I told him that things were MUCH different in the late 60's and early 70's on the typical college campus - I thought in great part because of the Military draft. Everyone had the potential to be involved and that made it important to everyone, in addition I told him about the nightly news showing the wounded and dead on a constant basis. There was simply no way to become disconnected like there is today.

Long story short - voices like yours Ms Greggs are what need to be cranked up to the max so everyone can take notice, become aware and most of all become involved.

a :toast: to you NanceGreggs

it will be much the same for the next year and a half. Bushco is not rich and fat off the backs of the troops, the taxpayers and they probably don't care, as callous as they have been. They have fulfilled their goals of robbing the people blind, passing the debt off to generations to come, and outsourcing jobs to Asia and illegal aliens, fattening up their bank accounts stashed in the Caribbeans. I saw a photo-op of Bush in Alabama with his arms around two young ladies maybe the same young ladies he used as props for the photo-op when he first touched ground from Air Force One in the Katrina aftermath. Bush is shameless and unremorseful. His partners in crime in the WH are probably laughing gleefully in the Oval Room because the Democratic leadership said impeachment is "off the table" and they can continue on for another 22 months.

40. Again folks,
there is another facility in DC which bears looking at and that is the Soldier's Home. My dad is a resident there and while they have 'fixed' the place up a bit, they SOLD the land it sits on....and that's just for starters. It's pretty ugly. Again, our little cheerleader PRETENDING to be a PATRIOT....he makes me so ill, I can't even stomach thinking of him. I have flushed better than what he portends to be.
