I wouldn't be if I were you. You directly implied that I don't have strong women in my life. Women like mother who lived through the Great Depression - who had to leave school at age 14 and try to find work to help support the family. And a grandmother who came to America at the age of 15. She had to travel without a companion all the way from Lithuania in 1912.

All I can say is that you ought to be ashamed of yourself for saying what you said to me.

51. so you want to compare our mothers now? ok
Edited on Sun Mar-04-07 02:33 PM by ProudToBeLiberal
When my mother came to united states, she didn't know how to speak any english. Do you know how hard it is to live in a country without knowing the language? Most of her family was in another country, so she didn't have a close family support system. She had to make a living by doing odds and end jobs, until she could get english lessons at a community college.

My grandmother, lived in the country side where the Japanese empire had a strangle hold on the country. Do you even know how it's to live under colonial rule? When another country forces to you to change your name and forces to deny your own culture?

Remember you're the one that wanted to compare mothers and grandmothers. I just was stating a fact that I had strong women in my life, until you assume to put words in my mouth.

And yes I'm proud to defend the women in my life. I am proud and LOUD!! You'll never be able to take away by heritage. NEVER!!

50. Historically, Susan B. Anthony, the suffragettes, and Betty Friedan had more of an impact
Edited on Sun Mar-04-07 03:07 PM by IndianaGreen
The trail blazers of the women's rights movement were invariably socialist, anarchist, very liberal, and in some cases, lesbians. To those of my generation, who can forget a Betty Freidan, Bellah Abzug, Anne Quindlan, Eleanor Roosevelt, Barbara Jordan, Emily Dickinson? Or the ones that came before them, women of great stature and courage such as Emma Goldman, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and others. Women that were persecuted, put in prison, and in Goldman's case, kicked out of the country.

The civil rights movement did not deal with women's rights, and civil rights leaders were often at odds with the women's movement. There was a racial divide, which still exist today. Groups such as the Nation of Islam, as well as others, saw the role of Black women as one subservient and supportive of Black men. They saw with suspicion the feminist movement which they considered primarily to be made up of middle class white women.

I will also point out that a lot of the opposition to LGBT rights also comes from the same Black pastors that speak about civil rights.

Let's not get historically inaccurate in a rush to appear part of the crowd.

103. Fortunately, the '64 Civl Rights Act banned discrimination in education
and the workplace on the basis of gender. That legislation has had a tremendous effect on many women's lives.

And to think that gender was included as a means to keep the male congresscritters from voting for it.

Of course, it would not have happened without the pioneers!

74. Yeah, like that cold day in February 2003 when I stood with hundreds of peace marchers
right across the street from an exclusive Republican club trying to get our "leaders" to stop Bush's plunge into a war in Iraq. Where were you then?

25. Unlike Bill, Hillary has no Negritude.
Bill grew up in the small-town South with the richness of black culture and the vestiges of Jim Crow all around him, while Hillary was a kid from the mostly white suburban Midwest. She'll never be able to speak with the kind of groove Bill has with a black audience.

36. She sounds strange when she tries to speak loudly
some people just don't have the voice for energetic speeches in large venues. No fault of her own, but Hillary is one of those people. And when she tries to make up for it, she does it by sounding almost robotic - a strange, nasally sing-song to her voice. I thought what she said today was fine, but she just sounded odd saying it. Didn't sound natural at all.

105. Oh, you responded alright....but no apology.
Someone is going to be the nominee. It doesn't make sense to demonize one candidate over another. What if your candidate doesn't win and Obama does? If Hillary Clinton wins, then I'll support her in the general election. I'm not going to demonize her because I happen to support Obama.

It's one thing to support your candidate, but to continue to bash another candidate just to prop Hillary up is stupid and it turns potential Hillary supporters off.

119. You're dead wrong to say that Tellurian's been bashing & demonizing any candidates
Saying stuff like that only goes a long ways toward backfiring on yourself.

Obama is my preference, too, and I've been in plenty of threads where Tellurian has shown him nothing but respect and admiration, so enough with spinning it like Tellurian's some kind of a Democrat basher. I know Tellurian is not anything like that in the least. In fact, it's shame that more people here don't stick up for Democrats as much as Tellurian does.

122. Upstream, he or she was accused of demonizing one candidate over another
and that simply is not true. From what I've seen, Tellurian has faithfully stuck up for all Democrats as much or more than anyone in this forum, never demonizing any of them.

If any demonizing is done, perhaps it's of the posters (not you) who asked for it after they went batshit crazy over something or someone and spun tall tales. Sometimes bashing a poster's extreme idolization of a candidate gets mistaken for bashing that candidate.

71. They had John Fund (WSJ RW hack) on with the rest being supposed
straight journalists - Ron Brownstein, Candy Crowley, not sure about the other - maybe Anne Kornblut.

Fund said Clinton's speech may have read better then Obama's but that didn't translate into the giving of the speech THEN he talked about how she mentioned the "canard" of voter suppression which isn't true, the Civil Rights Commission never found any voter suppression, blah, blah, blah.

I hate it when they pair standard journalists with RW opinion people and treat them all the same. So you have the journalists who just say bland stuff but then get a RW spin from the hack. It tilts everything to the right and the journalists never call the RW'ers on their BS.
