They completely side step the real elephant in the room: Did she out Edwards and, is he gay?

Where I come from if you call a man a Faggot and if he is not gay, then you just started a fight. If he is gay the same could likely be the outcome. Those are fighting words is what I am saying here.

When the hell have we had a prominent woman blatantly and visciously call a male public figure a Faggot?? Under what circumstance do you do that to someone? There are a myriad of attack words or phrases she could have used but she chose Faggot. WHY?

What was she implying? She damn sure meant it to relate to sexual orientation because she made the reference clear and linked it to the Ted Haggart drama.

Personally I think she outted John Edwards or meant to do so.

If John Edwards is not gay then he can't be outed. duh..

So is Edwards gay?

Of course she could have just been challenging Edward's manhood. If a fight ensues my money is on Coulter.

I've tried to stay away from this topic because of needless flamewars (c'mon people, if there's one thing we can agree on it should be that Coulter is abominable and that her remarks were hateful and disgusting no matter how you slice them), but this assertion is so damn nuts I just had to get my two cents in.

17. I think you've missed the point of what Coulter intended to do.

The insult, of course, is a double whammy. Coulter insulted Edwards by using a slur meaning homosexual (the "n-word" for gay men), and at the same time insulted all gay men.

But Edwards isn't gay, and I'm sure she knows that; and in any event, whether he is or isn't is irrelevant to what she was trying to do. For hateful homophobic conservatives like AnnThrax, "faggot" is one of the worst insults you can throw at somebody. For them, the issue isn't so much whether the target of the insult has sex with members of his own gender (although the phony "Christians" among them certainly deplore that, too) -- it's that if a man is identified as homosexual he is by definition weak and feminine (even though gay men are not necessarily "feminine," either), and that's the worst thing a man can be -- homophobes are deeply misogynistic, too. Coulter herself has made misogynistic remarks, so I guess she's a self-loathing wingnut.

By calling Edwards a "faggot," Coulter is saying he's weak and unmanly -- not necessarily that he is actually homosexual. Remember that she has implied the same about both Gore and Clinton. In the world of wingnuts all liberals are weak and unmanly because they aren't in such a big damn hurry to rush out and kill people.
The worst thing about this, in a way, isn't that Coulter said it. She's a vicious bomb-thrower and this is what she does. The worst thing is that her audience laughed and applauded instead of greeting her remark with the stony silence it deserved.
