GIVING CREDIT WHERE IT'S DUE
Giving Credit Where It’s Due
By Nancy Greggs

If you’re out of work because your government made it financially worthwhile for US companies to outsource your job to a cheaper labor market, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If your son/daughter in the military is in a combat zone without sufficient equipment or training, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If your war-wounded spouse is a war vet tied up in endless red tape and can’t get medical treatment or disability payments, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If a loved one died in NOLA for want of food, water, medicine, or assistance of any kind in the aftermath of Katrina, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you’re upset that New Orleans was left in ruins while we could afford to build a billion-dollar embassy in Baghdad, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If the cost of your life-saving prescription medicine has skyrocketed, even to the point where you can’t afford it at all, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you lose sleep at night worrying about the national debt your children and grandchildren will have to pay off in the decades to come, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you’re concerned about the fact that we don’t have the necessary funds to overhaul our crumbling infrastructure, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you’re worried about rising numbers in the incidents of homelessness and poverty, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you’ve had to declare bankruptcy, but you still owe your soul to credit card companies, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you’ve noticed that you’re continually getting gouged at the pump even though oil companies are raking in record profits, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you’re angry at the fact that you have to go through intensive screening at the airport to board a plane with a hold full of uninspected cargo, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you wonder why hard-working middle-class citizens have to pay their full share of taxes while wealthy individuals and corporations don’t have to pay their fair share, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you wonder why investigations into government corruption always seem to get stopped in their tracks, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you think it unseemly that fabrications and outright lies are permitted to be broadcast as unqualified fact, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you worry about your kids getting sick from tainted food that should have been inspected but wasn’t, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you’re concerned that religious fanatics have too much influence over your government, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you’re troubled by the erosion of your rights and freedoms and see that as an assault on democracy, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you are appalled by excuse-making and passing-the-buck having replaced accountability, THANK A REPUBLICAN.

If you have realized that the American Dream is now out-of-reach for millions of citizens, that the gap between the rich and the poor is growing at an alarming rate, that elections are no longer a matter of the will of the people but the whim of those who control the voting machines, that a nation that was once a Beacon of Democracy is now a nation that tortures, that the democratic country you were born and raised in is now indistinguishable from the worst dictatorship, that the Constitution is now treated as an antiquated document of no meaning, and that the country your ancestors fought and died for is no longer recognizable …

… don’t forget to THANK A REPUBLICAN.

3. We all should take self-employment courses...
When all the big companies vamoose, we can trade with our own skills to each other.

We all whine about offshored call centers being a boatload of rubbish; let's work locally again.

The media loves presenting "issues", but it's disgusting how they don't offer solutions or brainstorming of any sort.

So what if there's a road rage problem? Live closer to work, get a shift that's at off hours, et cetera. Guess which one the media will pounce on? That's right, the problem. (my two suggestions also help curb energy use; rush hour is murder for gas mileage and living closer won't do any harm. Never mind the psychological benefit of not having to sit in the car waiting all the doo-dah-day to drive to and fro...)

It's why it's becoming more tempting to avoid it completely; it's useless conjecture or hyperbole. Especially when some issues are beyond our control. We can still suggest, and it may or may not happen. Surprises can happen.

16. Thank you
The name comes from a post I read at The Smirking Chimp, referring to distractions that the corporate media deem as worthy of nonstop coverage (Britney Spears shaving her head comes to mind). Even though Anglo words render the phrase into faux French, I like it anyway. Ever since BushCo began disparaging the French for refusing to participate in the neocon's war for oil & empire, I've peppered my speech with French phrases whenever possible - anything from nom de plume to bête noire - just so long as it's French, it irritates all & sundry Republicans, neocon apologists & paleocons within earshot.

Ms. Greggs, I've been a fan of your writing for some time, and I'm honored to make your acquaintance as a DU member. In fact, the opportunity to associate with the good people on DU - many of whom I feel like I know already - was a big factor in my decision to make the leap and actually join. I hope that, sometime, I can contribute le mot juste to one of your posts.

18. Welcome to DU
I love your idea of speaking and including French phrases whenever possible. I only know a few, but am fairly fluent in Spanish, and what with the issue of immigration here, I do go out of my way to be "helpful" and translate Spanish to English whenever possible. I also speak Spanish to people who understand even a little, if I'm around a bigot I find especially obnoxious. We all do what we can...:hi:
