It shows more flexibility and adaptability than having an accent that never changes. Neither one is "right" or "wrong."

Obama sounded very Southern when speaking in Selma, even said "y'all." As far as I know, he never lived in the South. Hillary did live in the South long enough to have picked up an accent.

I'm not supporting either one of them but I'll defend anyone's right to pick up an accent.

I don't know if she was advised or if, as you say it comes naturally. But, If it was the former, I think it is a warning signal that she is being overly coached and it is not in her best interest.

I'm originally a Californian -- I don't know if there is a Californian accent other than, like the Midwest, a tone that is pretty flat -- but whenever I'm in certain Southern states for more than a gas stop, I pick up the drawl almost immediately, especially in states like Arkansas and Tennessee.

Psychologists have studied the phenomenon and found that it's not a deficiency to pick up accents easily. It does not mean that people don't know who they are or are "pandering." People who pick up accents easily are somewhat more adaptable and flexible than those who don't but there's nothing "wrong" with either group.

in the clips I saw. He actually said "y'all." He said "Don't tell me I'm not coming home when I come to Selma, Alabama," which was a little odd, I thought. (Yes, I understand what he meant but it was still an odd way to say it, IMO.) His speech cadences were surprisingly Southern for someone who's never lived in the South.

I'm not supporting either Clinton or Obama, but I think it's silly how people are attacking Clinton over this. If she sounded Southern at times, so what? She lived in the South for many years and was among Southerners again so it would be natural if she sounded more Southern in Alabama than she does in N.Y. Obama has never lived in the South, AFAIK, but he was the one saying "y'all." Why aren't people jumping on him for "pandering"?

Is it "pandering" to speak Spanish to a crowd that is made up of people who speak Spanish in their homes? Or is it simply relating to people? It could be either, and to assume that someone is "pandering" is unfair, since we can't get inside their heads to know what they're thinking.

I'm even willing to give W a pass on his accent because I think he tried to talk like a Texan in his youth, perhaps even did talk like a Texan, before being shipped off to Andover and Yale. (I wouldn't be surprised if he got yelled at at home for talking Texan, either.) When he slips into his faux-Texas accent, it's very odd but I think he usually does it in situations where he's hearing other Southern accents. I'm not sure he does it consciously.

I kept screaming inside...NO, No, No...stop it, the departure was so vivid a deaf man could pick it up. It looks stupid and it is not sincere.
