http://www.blogfordemocracy.org/2007/03/sunday_afternoon_with_gov_bill.htmlI (the poster) attended a fundriaiser for New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson at the home, or should I say the "Eco-Mansion" of Laura and Rutherford Seydel in Buckhead.
I've long been intrigued by Governor Richardson, he is not without international peacemaking accomplishments and a impressive legislative resume. I was extremely pleased to see that he is also not without humor and an easy going nature. Many in the crowd of 75 or so seemed to have some personal connection from one of his many endeavors, whether it was working at the energy department, a brother in law in Atlanta, the son of a former chief of staff, a former colleague from his days in Congress- the Hon. Buddy Darden, who co-hosted with former State Senator Sam Zamarippa and numerous others I didn't catch. I was happy to see several Georgia YD's representing, and asking the good questions too... ie. is he Pro-Choice, and the answer is yes....
I wondered what the connection between the Seydel family was with Gov. Richardson, which was explained within minutes, Mr. Seydel's father in law Ted Turner, is the largest landowner in the state of New Mexico. Gov Richardson was quick to point out that he and the Turner-Seydel family share a passion for the environment. The state of New Mexico under Gov Richardson still complying with the Kyoto treaty, although as a nation we do not. Most recently he and five other western state govenors agreed to cut greenhouse gasses.
There is certainly a lot to like about this candidate, and I won't go through it all, but I will tell you why I was there...I wanted to personally thank him for his use of inclusionary language for the LBGTQ community. As best I could tell ( and I was on a lot of cold medicine) he was the only candidate I heard speaking to the issue of equality for all at the DNC Winter meeting* aka cattle call in early February. I got my chance, and
his reply was direct, "always have always will". Good to know that me and my friends might not have to wave from under the bus forever. By the way, I was wearing a "I'm the Decider pin", he admired it and of course I gave it to him. He slapped it right on his blue blazer, pictures to follow, as soon as former Sen Zamarippa sends the photos I'll update this post.
I know everyone has their favorites, but I hope that as time passes and the bright lights blind some of the other candidates, you will all take a look at this man, his resume and give him a fair shake. As he said, keep your powder dry its only March.
