Barack’s star power gives him the edge over Hillary

SELMA, Ala. — Hillary Clinton was very good, Barack Obama was a little better.
In the battle for Selma — and the black vote across the U.S. — yesterday's round went to the senator from Illinois.
Both were greeted enthusiastically at historic black churches, where they pumped up the congregations with fiery speeches. Both were cheered as they marched to the Edmund Pettus Bridge, walking in the steps of civil rights pioneers beaten bloody 42 years ago.
But on a day when two presidential heavyweight contenders came to town, it was Obama's intensely personal and provocative remarks at Brown Chapel AME Church - and the rock-star treatment he received along the route of the march - that gave him an edge....

Obama linked his White House bid to the legacy of the civil rights movement.
"Don't tell me I don't have a claim on Selma, Ala. Don't tell me I'm not coming home to Selma, Ala. I'm here because somebody marched. I'm here because you all sacrificed for me. I stand on the shoulders of giants," he said....
Clinton, who has enjoyed great popularity among black voters but has seen Obama draw away support in recent polls, also linked her candidacy to the civil rights movement, saying Selma's struggles helped clear the way for a woman to run for President....

Far from being presented to the public as a chilly faceoff, Sens. Clinton and Obama, crossing paths on the campaign trail for the first time, shook hands at one point during the event and offered each other words of praise.
In the crowd, one dad who came from Atlanta was sure he was seeing history being made.
"Look at Obama, he's going to be the first black President," said Kenneth Byrd, who proudly took turns hoisting his son, Myles Byrd, 10, and daughter, Erin, up for a look.
