L. B. W. A. (Walter Reed)
I heard a three star general say yesterday he lived close to Bldg 18 at Walter Reed but did not conduct inspections. Far be it for a Navy Chief to counsel an 0-9, but Sir you don't need to conduct formal inspections, just practice LBWA. (Leadership By Wandering Around.) Get the fuck out of your office and see what the troops are doing or eyeball your mission in action and if there are errors those three stars come in handy. LBWA is great for keeping congressional hearings away and will do away with any need for public outrage. Its an awesome leadership tool. When someone says Walter Reed is a classic FAILURE OF LEADERSHIP, they are right on the money. The three star will be punished by being allowed to retire and enjoy a godawful pension for life.

2. That was Kiley; he should be fired 'immediately'!
This is the schmo who claimed the rats and roaches should be blamed on the wounded soldiers because they ate in their rooms. Here's a couple of threads. How did a man like this get where he is to begin with?

3. I heard that last night I went into a rant that made my g/f tell me
"turn off the damn news and put in a Married with Children DVD or something!"

I'm firmly convinced that on my ship the XO got a report every morning of whose rack was properly made up. I know this because if mine wasn't I heard about it. It is inconceivable to me that a CO doesn't conduct inspections. Today's military must be very very different from the one I was in.

5. I advocate
regularly scheduled material and personnel inspections (you have to) but taking a daily look at your people is the easiest way to control damage. I detected an I don't give a shit attitude from the guy.

My wife also has to ask me to go away sometimes when I start cussing at the TV set.

4. Aside from LBWA who is in charge of the Physical Plant?
and who is in charge of them and who is in charge of them and so forth.

Jon Stewart nailed it last night after showing Tony Snow saying that reporters should check with the DoD not (by gosh) the White House THEY have nothing to do with it... sayeth Stewart "I'm not picking my nose my hand is picking my nose"

6. I'll tell you who SHOULD be in charge
It's the Non Commissioned Officers (NCOs). All of whom were, quite properly, fired or reassigned. This issue, the living spaces of soldiers, is the primary mission of those senior sergeants who so totally blew it. If they requested repairs, and those repairs did not happen, they should have closed off any infected room and NOT allowed patients into them until repairs had been completed.

They made some guy or gal the Medical Holding Detachment First Sergeant. That person totally and completely failed in the primary mission of the NCO - to take care of the troops. Frankly, that NCO should be punished for dereliction of duty, and reduced in grade.

7. Yep
Health and welfare of the personnel (signed for by the Lt.) is primarily the responsibility of the NCO's
