buildup - but some early signs of encouragement... and the crawl that followed is the sad part - 9 U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq.
I think that this was intended to embarass the pResident - done on purpose - that part is humorous.

Take a data point - go into an area where the bad guys had ample time to lay low and make broad assumptions that everything is great. It is incredible on our smugness and ego - that our politicians and media assume our own moral and intellectual superiority, and treat our enemies as if they are finite cardboard cutouts. What a sham - we are in such deep trouble over there - a true quagmire with no possible good outcome. And as Nero fiddles, Rome burns (= our brave troops die). pathetic.
