Poll question: If the clot forces him out, who gets the job?
I've heard the suggestions of Giuliani or McCain, but won't picking one of the current contenders piss off about half the Republican party? It would be such a boost to whoever got it, I think the resentment would really tear them apart when they really need to be unified. And who would Bush really back stab? He's openly flirted with both men.

There's the Rice option, what with all the "firsts" she'd bring to the job. First PhD to be Vice President. First former national security advisor to become VP. First unmarried VP. Maybe a couple of other demographic firsts, but I can't think of anything else right off the bat. The problem with Rice is two-fold. First, you have to wonder if the people who put her in as a token babysitter really want her filling Dick Cheney's shoes. It's okay to have a woman giving you some office diversity. But give her real power? I don't think there's much of a groundswell for that. After the ISG spanking Bush got last fall, I don't think he's got the free reign he once had in appointments. Plus there's Laura.

Second on the downside here for Dr Strangerice is that if nominated, she'd have to face the Congress. They're not in a giving mood these days. Her record as a grownup member of the administration is a bit mixed. She loses paper work. She ignores memos with titles like "Bin Laden torturing orphans in our fire escape right now... Oh My Gawd!" Will they really want that type of performance scrutinized right about now?

They could always go with the senior statesman: one who won't upset the party members fighting over the upcoming nomination. A Dick Lugar, an Orrin Hatch, or some similar graybeard with gravitas but none of those annoying backbone issues that bother corporate America so. If an older guy isn't to their liking, if they need more pizzazz, then some future graybeard with a safe voting record but no big scandals running down their sheet. Mitch McConnell would fill that bill, being the GOP's current Bob Dole clone. Or old time Bush buddy Tom Ridge, who was Bush's first love in the veepstakes in 2000.

If they do appoint a senator, bet your last bippy it'll be one from a state with a Republican governor. You never know when Lieberman could flip. For that matter, why not nominate Lieberman? That right there solves a lot of problems... from regrabbing the Reagan Democrats to opening up a slot from a state with, you guessed it, a Republican governor, ergo a senate-flipper. They can then play that "bipartisan" card out the wazolla.

This opens up possibilities for the Republicans stealing the eco-friendly issue in '08 and will keep the White House looking above the fray and unafraid of bringing in their own critics. And seriously, how can the Dems ever say "no" to Joe? I mean, just look at those puppy dog eyes. Awwwww.

The perfect answer is Colin Powell, of course. Yeh, like that's gonna happen. Bush is pissed at Powell for defecting to the side of fact-lovers. Grrrr. It may satisfy all sorts of interest groups, but there's also the president's personal predilictions to factor in in these kinds of choices.

Interest groups aside, then, Bush will ultimately be the one selecting Cheney's successor. We really can't rule out Harriet Myers.

Just so they can hedge their bets in case Obama gets the Dem nomination next year. So the Repubs can say to the African-American community that they're collectively not racists.

I'm probably way off base, just a hunch.

Yep, the Senate will have to confirm. The hearings would be so much fun.

On edit:

My hubby just said, "There is probably somewhere buried in the anti-patriot act a clause saying that in time of war, the president does not have to get congressional approval for a vp appointment..."

12. Congress does have to confirm the new VP.
That's in Amendment 25.

That means that the worst raving lunatics won't pass muster. No Sam Brownback or Duncan Hunter. John Bolton and Negroponte are out too. Bush will have to pick a candidate who's perceived to be mostly harmless, or at least isn't implicated in any of the criminal activity of the Bush administration. It'll be a chance for the administration to anoint Bush's successor. John McCain's a likely nominee. It's possible that Giuliani's on the list too. Condi Rice is out - the Democratic Party's fully aware of her track record and her neo-con views - her nomination will get buried quickly. So is Powell - all the lies that came out of the Bush Administration to start the war in Iraq came out of his mouth at the UN. Lieberman's out - the governor of Connecticut is a Republican, and will appoint a Republican to replace him, destroying Democratic control of the Senate, so the Senate has good reason to bury that nomination.

Maybe the replacement will be a Gerald-Ford-like candidate that's chosen solely for being perceived as Mostly Harmless.

20. "...majority vote of both houses of Congress..."
Dems might stop a nominee in the House, but never in the Senate - we have only 50 nominal Dems, and some of those would vote for any nominee bush sent them.

But there is almost a 'code' that any nominee sent who is a member of Congress gets a pass. Brownback or Hunter would sail through.

The Senate has to approve.
We have a majority in the Senate.
Even without Lieberman, we have plenty of votes to filibuster anyone Bush** picks.

* and Darth, but if Darth resigns (or is impeached) then * gets to nominate his successor. This happened when Agnew stepped down under Nixon and Nixon nominated Ford rather than the speaker (Carl Albert, D-Oklahoma I think) getting the job.

36. If Cheney were to step down, Bush would choose
Tim Pawlenty or Rob Portman to replace him.

He'd prefer John Bolton or George Allen -- using the John Ashcroft formula for presidential Cabinet appointments (guy suffers defeat, guy gets Cabinet role with Bush administration).

Lugar and Danforth would be better for the GOP, but would both be passed over because they remain sentient and courteous and observant of the old protocols.

Haley Barbour is another choice. He's got that big Rolodex and that glad-handing chicken-dinner attitude that could patch up a few holes in the fence.

54. I think this is half of McCain's pandering
is that he has hoped that Cheney would leave under some reason, and he could get in early and then get to run
in 2008 as an incumbent. The best part of letting him have the job would be that Gov Napolitano would get to
appoint a Democrat to fill his post, and we could tell Lieberman to pound sand.
