Think Progress - Libby’s pardon problem
Edited on Wed Mar-07-07 09:25 PM by blitzburgh55
Libby’s pardon problem

Newsweek reports that Scooter Libby “does not qualify to even be considered for a presidential pardon under Justice Department guidelines,” which in part “require a petitioner to wait a period of at least five years after conviction or release from confinement (whichever is later) before filing a pardon application.” President Bush can easily waive the rules, but up until now he “seems to have followed those guidelines religiously.”

2. But there's precident for a pardon BEFORE jail.
Cap Weinberger, and a number of people associated with Iran contra. My guess is that he will grant Libby a pardon, I'mjust not sure he will do it BEFORE Libby serves any time. Remember, Wells ticked off the judge by promising to put Libbyon the stand, and then refusing to do so. That judge has the ability to send Libby to prison while filing his appeals. We'll seewhat happens in June.

4. I thought the pardon of Marc Rich STUNK when it happened.
It's *horrible* that it's coming back at us now.

I also heard recently that one of D. Geffen's problems is that he had advocated for a pardon for Leonard Peletier and Clinton chose Rich instead. I was trying to look that one up, but have not succeeded yet.
