Burton says schedule kept him from Walter Reed hearing

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Dan Burton said he wasn't able to attend Monday's congressional hearing on problems at Walter Reed Army Medical Center because of a scheduling conflict.

But Burton, R-Indianapolis, said he cared about the issue and thought the treatment soldiers and veterans receive at all military facilities should be reviewed.

<snip>

Former Marion County Coroner John McGoff, who plans to challenge Burton in the 2008 GOP primary, has said Burton's absence from the hearing is as inexcusable as the conditions and care that soldiers received at the medical center.

"Lives are at risk, and there is no time to miss meetings or ignore the situation," McGoff said Tuesday.

<snip>

"Even if I didn't have any appointments, I would've had to come back Sunday night or catch a plane at 7 in the morning or 6 in the morning," Burton said, adding that the congressional schedule makes it difficult for him to spend time with his wife, whom he married in the fall. "I've got this new lady I want to have some life with, and I can't even see her."

1. all he has to do is put her in an apartment in DC
problem solved. If she can not leave Indianapolis because of her job, then they need to decide what is more important to them, his job, her job, or time together and no job!!! One would think they discussed the situation before they got married. He makes over $160,000 per year, it is not like he can not afford the plane ticket.

8. new lady... interesting...
maybe I missed it but I have to wonder if he got a divorce or was widowed. Why does that matter? This was the Clinton harasser (in Waxman's current position as chair of govt reform committee) who held ridiculous hearing after hearing and publicity stunt after publicity stunt (shooting a watermelon in his back yard to "show" how Vince Foster could have been murdered) - who was forced to admit he had an illegitimate son who he had been forced to pay support for but had NEVER met (the kid was something like 11 years old at the time, iirc). His wife at the time 'stood by him'. Wonder what happened to her?

The guy was known as a crude womanizer when he was in the State House. You know the type - send the female lobbyist on staff as she will get better results - but ask her not to mind if he reaches up her skirt to cop a feel. Total jerk/*ss.

Boo fucking hoo. Go Greyhound, and Leave the Driving to Us, then...or get a packet of tix on Jet Blue, and do a little commuting, like others who live on less pay in similar straits have to do.

There's no fool like an old fool. This idiot is so worried about getting his swerve on that he'll ignore one of the most important committee meetings of the entire YEAR. What a putz...

3. I would say get him home and out of DC.
That guy is on the side of nuts any how. For years he has had a wife and girls friends etc. That came out years ago with odd kids running around. I am sure I recall it when all those other high value GOP guys were telling us how we should live.

4. Sounds like it's time to send him home 'to spend more time with his family'
When is he up for reelection? Let's do a fund raiser 'selling' mock tickets to send him home to his honey as a fund raiser for our nominee.

Scheduling conflict?? A booty call more important than a hearing about a troop medical care crisis during a war? Burton, you're an ass.

6. If this job isn't working for you Mr Burton...
Please, feel free to find something more convenient in the private sector.

7. was just going to post about the arrogance of "blow up the watermelon" burton
Not more than three weeks ago the local news covered his abysmal voting record - esp when ever there is a celebrity golf tournament. He went on the air - contrite, appologetic, no excuse - I'll do better.... blahblahblah... and an issue emerges that captures the attention of constituents - and he is arrogant enough to think that it won't matter that he doesn't attend the committee hearing?

Arrogance is not new to Burton - but the level of arrogance seems to hav been long accepted and ignored by his constituents. It will be his long-overdue political down fall.

9. hmm ... I wonder if he found the time to fly in (and cancel any obligations)
when it came to having that non-binding, "for-show" legislation "saving Terri Schiavo" be voted on ...

10. Going home and getting his noodle wet is more important than helping Iraq vets?
I see his priorities havent changed with the new change in congress!

11. If you have a problem with the schedule, resign
That's the best solution for lazy Republicans.
