Damned Spot: John Edwards' Bad Edit — The candidate's video sleight of hand

John Edwards is serious about health care. In fact, his proposal for revamping America's chaotic health-care system is more serious and detailed than any of the other candidates' plans. But when Edwards sent out a campaign video to 70,000 Iowa voters earlier this week, something caught our eye—a bit of video-editing trickery that made Edwards appear to be talking about medical care when he was really talking about Iraq.

1. Wow. That's almost ... significant.

So, Edward's big sin is he edited a comment of his about Iraq to the back end of a comment of his about health care. And not even a significant comment, just a description of how passionate he feels about the subject.

What bullshit.

2. Actually, that's an ignorant assessment by the Slate person

John Edwards, at the end of the speech, talked about being "courageous" and finally calling for Universal Health Care for every man, woman, and child.

So, the Edwards campaign sees it as the same "concept." They think calling for Universal Health Care also takes political courage. Since it does, according to everything that John Edwards has said to date about Health Care, they probably saw no problem using that line for Health Care. It applies. It's not like John Edwards can plagiarize himself.

I think that Slate person is being picky.
