I will not patronize any business that plays Fox news
Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 10:50 PM by greenbriar
they have a really nice TV while waiting to get the oil changed I was going to watch it, but FOX news was on. I went to retrieve my keys before they could get started...they asked if something was wrong I said YES they had fox noise on and I was not going to patronize them any more

they went behind the counter and handed me the remote and gave me 5 dollars for their little snack area too!!!

ONE person, one day at a time

Keep in mind I paid CASH for my new vehicle and they have been the only ones to service it. Told them that my next vehicle would be bought at a dealership that did not play fox news

5. I did the same thing at a McDonald's yesterday.
Quietly told the cashier if they did not switch channels I would not order or ever return. Didn't figure they would really care about the $2.34 Happy Meal.

However, the manager got involved and was very upset. It was not supposed to be on Fox - they are supposed to leave it on CNN.

It's the background in nearly every business in which people wait in my area, unfortunately.

Once, I changed the channel and was applauded. LOL.

8. I saw poll results on misinformtion
it went from Fox to NPR and something like 80+ % of Faux viewers were misinformed, repeating things like Iraq had WMD or Saddam did 9-11) , down to NPR which was still 20% or so, which is pretty bad, too. CNN was in the middle. Can't remember the link

to turn on their channel just to find out who their advertisers are! The only time I've ever even hadFN on my TV was when I heard Howard Dean was going to be on, and as usual, Howardmade me proud!

11. Good idea. The worst is when it's a TV in a doctor's office.

Considering the high percentage of FOXbots who work in doctors' offices here, I've had to endure this, as well as awful country music and, in one office, a radio evangelist. :puke:

I hate TVs in public places anyway. The only good thing that can be said is that sometimes they keep people from discussing all the details of their bout with "stomach flu" or their hemmorrhoid surgery.

If I made the laws, I'd make it a law that people have to be quiet and read in all waiting rooms. (If they can't read, they can look at pictures in magazines.)

15. As I said on GD
Don't get me wrong, it's OK to boycott businesses that are Fox News friendly, but I don't feel I have the right to tell them what channel they should watch or not. The eye clinic mom goes to has Fox News on all day, and even though I don't like it, I don't feel I have the right to tell them not to watch that. What about the other customers who like it?

I'm all about living and letting live. Just respect my views and I'll respect yours, as stupid as they might be.

show faux news on their tvs and I will tell them why they wont get my business. Most business care about one thing....the bottom line and if they think they are losing money because of the channel their tv is tuned to, they will make the change.

18. I agree, but only somewhat...
I would just ask them if there was some place else I could wait, as I don't watch Fox News.

Now this is what I would do at a doctor's office. I would do the same as the OP at a retail or auto service/dealer.

We must always speak to the "audience." Some audiences listen differently to different messages, but I will never just sit in any establishment and watch something offensive without saying something.

29. Good idea - I always wonder why so many places have to have
something on, anyway - the noise pollution these days is incredible. It's hard even to find a restaurant that doesn't play the radio - music I don't mind, but the radio with ads and announcers - why do people want to listen to that constantly?

32. If there are other people in the waiting room,

I think you should ask "Are you watching this?" or "Mind if I try another channel?" Most of the time they'll say "Go for it."

It's been my experience that people are glad when somebody has the guts to ask "Mind if I turn the tv off?"

I think a lot of people resent the encroachment of tv into every part of our lives, even if they watch tv at home.

26. My local favorite dive and grill had Fox mixed in with the usual espn

I knew the guy who rented the apartment above the place so I gave him a list of quotes
from Fox Talking Point briefs, you know the ones to downplay the casualties in the Iraq War, and others.

I also quoted an article about Rupert Murdock his ownership of Chinese media as well as being Australian not American born.

The Fox stopped within a month and this was back in 2004.

My suggestion for the stubborn places is to make them new place mats that use simple facts about how non-American the practices of Fox News Corp are.

But I have had to leave places, though one afternoon about a year ago at a fast food place, I noticed that of the four choices people had for different video the Fox news was loosing out to an ESPN documentary and cartoons in addition to cnn.

but I saw one while out with my finacee, about 25 miles from where we live, and decided to drop in. I had my stuff all set to check out when I heard the radio come back from commercial, and he was listening to Rush.

So I told him I didn't want the stuff, afterall, and left.

31. Tommy's Country Ham House usually has FOX News. Tommy is a liberal democrat.
I eat breakfast there all the time. Tommy hates Bu$h and the GOP. I once asked him why he played FOX News. "Many of my best customers ask for FOX and very few ask for anything else. The liberals like you and me would rather talk and read the paper." Ironically, there are many happy liberals (although a minority) eating at Tommy's, enjoying the food, and ignoring the TV. Tommy loves to go from table to table and show off his digital Bu$h count-down key chain. He also buys the NY Times, as well as the local rags, for his customers to read at breakfast.

I have even gotten up and walked over to one of the TVs (I sit on the other side of the big room, but I can read the scroll) and laughed at FOX coverage with Tommy or others. Remember, this is BoJo country (Bob Jones "University"): The buckle of the Bible Belt.

38. Tommy's right, IMO, Liberals read to get their news
And don't need TV News to validate their views. Don't get me wrong, I love shows like Keith Olbermann, but unlike the Republic Party, I don't need people like him on TV 24/7 telling me that I'm right.

36. I did that at my bank. Their TVs were turned to Pox Noise and I
complained. Complained to the teller, then went over and complained to the manager. Courteously, of course. But I complained. And next time I went in there, and it was still on, I complained again. Shortly thereafter I noticed that the TV was on CNN. Well, how 'bout that? I thanked the teller (and subsequently, the manager also), who told me she was relieved, herself. She also said there had been other complaints about it, too. Don't forget about the positive reinforcement, too, when they do something good!

This stuff WORKS, guys! :headbang:

37. Be careful
Edited on Sat Mar-10-07 02:41 AM by Left Hook
Things might turn the other way. I personally don't care what they watch. I will stick with Comedy Central. I pay no mind to what businesses are showing, I just read in resterants, oil changers, doctor's offices, etc.

The reason is, I use to work at Garfields where there were about 9-10 TVs all over the joint. One of the bar TVs has Fox News. There were some complaints over having Fox on and it was turned off to MSNBC. But there were much more complaints in not having Fox on then there are Fox off. So 2 weeks later, Fox was back on.

Another example to please be vigilant.

42. Certainly! And Welcome to DU, btw!
Your points are well-taken. My bank story included a small hiccup in which I'd managed to get the channel changed, but then a few weeks later when I went in, there it was back on Pox Noise. So I complained again for a second round - to the teller and then to the manager on duty. After that, I noticed it was always on CNN, and it's evidently remained that way. I of course thanked them, told them I'd noticed their monitor is NOT on Pox Noise anymore, and that's when they told me there had been complaints. So you win some, you lose some, and then you win some again.

The point here, that you made at the end, is "PLEASE BE VIGILANT!!!" And, certainly, polite as can be. I always try to use my sweetest, gentlest, least aggressive tone of voice, and I try to come off as just some mild-mannered, slightly timid woman with this teeny-tiny little bone to pick but who isn't interested in making a big stink about it. THAT part of me (the guerrilla ninja fighter I sometimes envision when thinking of this in trench-fighter activism terms) I keep mostly hidden, because it usually isn't needed. When dealing with civilians like this, you always have to try to be mellow about it. It's schtick. But it's a very shrewd disarming tool available for use, which can work really nicely and effectively in the vast majority of cases. No need to get in anybody's face about it most of the time.

You don't win 'em all, but I think it's important to aim for victories both big AND small. They all add up after awhile. We wouldn't be in the position we are all in, collectively, at this very moment - with the Dems starting to fight back on all these different and varied fronts, and from the position of majority status, without every single one of those victories, both big AND small. They all added up to this. And the meter's still running.
