Curious--Who have you backed in past Dem primaries
If you're willing to share. Moreso who you backed than voted, I know in some cases the person backed may have dropped out and not been on the ballot by the time you voted.

My first year to vote was 1988

1988--Paul Simon
1992--Clinton
1996--Clinton
2000--Bradley
2004--Kerry

1. This question is nearly meaningless if you're not a resident of an early primary state,

3. You don't have to share
I'm just curious and I'm not saying it's meaningful. In fact, the year I backed Bradley, he had dropped out by the time my state had voted. But I had signed up to back him.

6. OK, here goes...
1964 Goldwater (OK, I was nuts. I was a libertarian before the term was invented back in those days.)
1968 In Vietnam at the time & somewhat inactive in domestic politics.
1972 McGovern.

1980 Carter. I was pissed at Teddy for his divisiveness.
1984 McGovern again for a little while, then Mondale after McG dropped out
1988 Dukakis
1992 Nobody excited me too much.
1996 Klintoon.

8. Oh Lord, here's the parade of losers.
1980--Jerry Brown. I didn't like Carter or Kennedy and I liked Brown's environmental record--the fact that he was pretty good looking in those days and was running around with Linda Ronstadt didn't hurt.

1984--Can't remember liking anyone.

1988-Gary Hart, after he got caught on the good ship "Monkey Business", Jesse Jackson.

1992--Jerry Brown. At least I'm loyal. He actually did pretty good, running a shoestring campaign on small donations. Then he got palsy with Gore Vidal and Al Sharpton thereby kissing the Jewish vote in New York goodbye. Yup I was cursed.

2000--Bill Bradley--alright it WAS hopeless.

2004--Originally John Kerry thanks to his work on the Iran Contra scandal, disappointed with his campaign and his vote for the war, I jumped on the Dean bandwagon. The curse of the Cowgirl continued.

2008--I'm reluctant to support anyone though I'd love to see Gore get into the race and am liking what I see in Bill Richardson (sorry Governor) and Barack Obama is beginning to impress.

9. My first primary support was in 2003-2004 for Clark.
I never voted in the primaries before that. I assumed Gore was going to win the nomination in 2000. And, I just assumed Clinton was going to be nominated again in 1996 since he was president.

In 1992, I didn't care who won the primary. I didn't even know who Clinton was until the Gennifer Flowers scandal. Then I voted for him in the general election.

Before that, I was too young to vote.

I support Obama this time around.

10. I'll be brief.
2008 Most likely Obama if Clark and Gore don't run. If either or both of them do, it'll be a toss up.

12. There were only two...
primaries that I paid close attention to and backed someone who I really wanted to win, 1992 and 2004.

In 1992 I loved Jerry Brown. I was so upset when Clinton won the nomination, I left NYC for the Democratic Convention because I couldn't stand all of the hoopla surrounding what seemed to me like Clinton's coronation.

I didn't think I could fall harder for a politician than I did for Jerry but then I discovered Wes in 2003. I backed Clark very strongly and will again should he decide to run.

1964 -- There was no one but LBJ
1968 -- Eugene McCarthy (After he supported Ronnie in 1984 I disowned him)

1976 -- Carter
1980 -- Kennedy (I knew Carter was doomed)
1984 -- Hart (But the machine installed Mondale)
1988 -- I liked Jesse Jackson, knew Dukakis would lose
1992 -- President Clinton
1996 -- Ditto
2000 -- President Gore
2004 -- John Edwards
2008 -- Edwards and Gore

15. It gets harder to remember the older one gets, but here it goes...
I will add one caveat, the Indiana primary is in May which except for 1968, had no impact in the selection of the nominee. Kerry was already all but anointed as the nominee by the time Hoosiers voted in the primary, a fact that allows for a protest vote.

1968 - Bobby Kennedy (most inspirational candidate ever!)
1972 - George McGovern (the best human being to run for Presidency, better than Jimmy Carter).
1976 - Jimmy Carter (I was in Georgia when he became governor and said inhis inaugural that the days of racial segregation were over. Lester Maddox had been a national embarrassment!)
1980 - Jimmy Carter (I never been so scared as the day I voted for Carter. I feared that Reagan was going to destroy our country. He didn't, but he got us well on the way down to Hell).
1984 - Walter Mondale (Mondale was the only rational choice left from a weak field)
1988 - Michael Dukakis (Very underrated by the public)
1992 - Big Dog (I supported both Paul Tsongas and Big Dog, but by the time of primary, Tsongas had dropped out.
1996 - Big Dog (he ran unopposed, but I still voted for him).
2000 - Al Gore (did not vote for him in general, he trailed by 20 points in Indiana so I cast protest vote for Ralph Nader because I was, and stil am, pissed off about the undemocratic electoral system we have, and I hate the sham we have for debates. I prefer the debates organized by the League of Women Voters).
2004 - Dennis Kucinich (the most satisfying vote since I voted for George McGovern)

16. Ok
My first year to vote was 1992, but I'll go back one cycle before that cuz I paid attention then too.
1988: Dukakis.
1992: Brown.
1996: There really was no challenge to Clinton, so Clinton I guess.
2000: Leaned toward Bradley early, but it was over too early to say for sure.
2004: Dean, then Kerry after the debates. Voted for Dean early.

Edited on Sat Mar-10-07 09:44 PM by ooga booga
1972 -- George McGovern maybe - don't remember
1976 -- don't remember
1980 -- George H.W. Bush - Voted in the GOP primary in a desparate attempt to help stop Reagan
1984 -- Gary Hart - I really believed in him. It became embarrassing later.
1988 -- don't remember - I just remember voting for Dukakis and knowing that it was futile
1992 -- Paul Simon - I preferred Simon, but he dropped out before Texas, so I voted Clinton
1996 -- Bill Clinton - I knew Clinton would smoke old doleful Bob Dole
2000 -- Al Gore (I think)
2004 -- Wesley Clark - He withdrew before the Texas primary. I voted for him anyway.

19. It must be a sign of age (and today's my birthday) that I can't remember my first election.
I do remember supporting Carter and despising Reagan--since I was a resident of CA and had watched him screw over the university system.

I was never much of a fan of Bill Clinton--but did support him.

I liked Al Gore in 2000.

I was an absolutely crazed Deaniac in 2004.

Now I'm leaning towards Edwards, but could see myself favoring Obama
if Edwards loses traction. I do not want to see Hillary get the nomination, so
I'll support either Edwards or Obama.
