4. Spiro Agnew
His crime was accepting bribes (I believe) while he was governor of Maryland. His most famous line - only famous line, I think, was calling the press "nattering nabobs of negativism."

29. I heard that line was written by William Safire. Buchanan wasn't that poetic.

Wikipedia credits Safire with the line.

Spiro Agnew
pled nolo contendere to tax evasion, but the underlying crime was taking bribes when he was Maryland's Governor.

He took bribes while gov of Maryland...and what is ironic? He went down for tax evasion BECAUSE HE DID NOT REPORT THE BRIBES as income on his returns!

He was a prototype for Cheney -- sly, disparaging, sneaky, snotty, and a know-it-all. And he sunk like a stone.

And he was convicted of tax evasion on bribes (the Al Capone rule). Strangely, he was never charged with taking bribes though.

13. It was Spiro Agnew
He resigned amid charges of tax evasion. He got the super-duper deal on that one.

Wikipedia has a collection of "his" famous quotes, but they were mostly written by Pat Buchanan and William Safire.

During the 1968 election, my father was working for Johnson at the White House and my mother was working for Humphrey's national campaign office. That was when Nixon's slogan was "Nixon's the One!". My father said he wanted a bumper sticker that said "Nixon's the One. And Spiro's the Zero." That still makes me laugh today.

Interesting to note that Mitt Romney's dad, George, nearly became the VP candidate in '68.

27. First criminal VP: Agnew, 2nd criminal VP: Ford.
Agnew's crimes well discussed here. Ford's crimes go back to the Warren Commission (if not before) and continue to the pardon of Nixon. Criminal.

Though I think Goldwater said something about it too. Nobody in my Government class seemed to find this suspicious :eyes:

David Fry -- Richard Nixon, A Fantasy

Agnew was busted for taking cash bribes while governor of Maryland.

And, duh, nattering nabobs of negativism.

Our highest-ranking Greek-American in U.S. history, unfortunately. I don't think the Greeks brag about him as much as the Irish do Kennedy.

He pleaded guilty to tax evasion; but was also believed to have committed other crimes, including taking bribes as a state governor.

Was 'Silent Majority' his phrase, or was it Nixon's?

I once heard of a child - was it in Agnew's time? - who wrote in a school exercise, "Vice means something bad, like a vice-president."

But no one could be worse than Cheney!
