Sorry, but Schumer's a blowhard...
and his call for Gonzo's resignation makes nice copy but ain't gonna happen today.

Leahy has the right idea-- stretch it out and make a bulletproof case with much worse consequences for the White House than just Gonzo taking a hike.

Been hearing about Leahy's plans and just heard him interviewed on NPR. What he has in store for these pantloads is just so sweeeeeet...

1. Holy ulterior motive, Batman! Details, please.
I haven't been able to listen to NPR today.

What is Leahy planning?

9. Well, he started out by saying...
that Cabinet members served at the behest of the President so it's a bit tricky for Senators to fool around with Cabinet appointments already made, so he couldn't call for resignation. Yet.

Then, he talked about how what Gonzo "took responsibility" for was reprehensible although not necessarily illegal, and that Gonzo is a reprehensible sort who seems not to have noticed that he is no longer the President's chief counsel.

Soooo.... the hearings will concentrate on "Is this the sort of person the President relies on?" And that sort of thinking will carry a looong way.

He also repeated the new meme that "The President seems to think that this Congress is the same one that rolled over for him in the past." Or words to that effect.

Put on your seatbelts...

14. Thanks. It does look like it might be a bumpy ride ahead. For the GOP.
And that's just fine by me. The deserve everything they'll likely get, and then some.

2. Not to mention Conyers
"Mr. President, the days of the old Congress are over. We are going to get to the truth, without or without your cooperation" (or words to that effect). Wants KKKarl under oath ASAP ...

:woohoo:

That's fine. If it makes Abu Gonzales dig in his heels harder and fight it right to the bitter end, that's fine by me.

4. The press conference I just saw in video had no blowhard at all.
I've had a lot of problems with Schumer lately but I have NONE with this press conference where he laid out the conspiracy rather well and with appropriate gravity.

He and Feinstein were seriously discussing a deeply serious matter.

And what they planned to do about it.

Oh, I bet you think Leahy just does what he wants without discussing it with anyone.

10. Yeah, he calmed down a little, and...
made a reasonable case, but that's just the diversionary assault, and I'm not sure all the Democrats agreed with it-- he might just quit, and that might not be so good.

The real attack comes later when the hearings build the case. If Gonzo does take a hike, the fireworks are off and the flow goes back to the White House for "resolving" the situation. If they're dumb enough to keep him around, he has the big battle over testifying, Hughes gets raked over the coals, and it's all about a sitting AG under fire and a President who has to defend him, and might have his own battle about testifying about White House interference with the AG's office.

That's the sort of thing that gets Shrub up there with Nixon's last months.

and doesn't fear the consequences..He would be great to go to a higher office but- because of his outspokenness..it won't happen..His credibility is usable where it is.

8. Even seen a bullfight?
The matador and his assistants don't just fatally lance the bull. They do it in a long process that slowly makes the bull weak...and then the final lance for the kill.

Consider Schumer a lance assistant with one put in near the shoulder...

11. We need both
Nobody comes to watch the boxers study boxing films before the fight. That's what these hearings are to most people, so it's good to have the front man out there with the preview.

12. I wouldn't call him a blowhard, but we all know he's a sucker for the camera
It's funny to watch him work the media in New York. Every Sunday night, and I mean EVERY Sunday night, he makes the local news here because he knows it's a slow day and the local tapeheads will show up at any event he does. He's the warm and fuzzy version of Al D'Amato, the original Senator Pothole.
