The Name of the Game By Nancy Greggs
Well, my Republican friends, it looks like things aren’t exactly going your way these days. We’re only three months into 2007, and 2008 is already looking like a write-off for you and yours.
The Iraq situation worsening all the time, Bush now personally connected to the Abu Ghraib atrocities, Gonzo lying about the attorney firings, Halliburton packing up and getting’ outta Dodge – and with those damned Democrats armed with investigatory and subpoena power, God only knows how much more of your dirty laundry will be aired between now and the next election.
Too bad you were all so quick to fall into lock-step behind your Little Leader. Even though the BushBaby won't be running again, your entire party is now inextricably linked to every lie, every scandal, every nasty little action perpetrated by the White House, its staff, or any one of your erstwhile colleagues.
In keeping with the situation, maybe your best bet is to market yourselves as you really are, and highlight the things you actually stand for, instead of trotting out those now-laughable old slogans about being the party of fiscal responsibility and family values.
A few suggestions, if I may?
Thanks to colleagues like Cunningham, DeLay and Ney, and your party’s widespread association with Jack Abramoff, how about THE PARTY OF CORRUPTION.
Due to the Foley fiasco last fall, THE PARTY WHO ELECTS PEDOPHILES has a nice, honest ring to it.
You allowed the country to be plunged into unprecedented debt – THE PARTY OF FISCAL IRRESPONSIBILITY.
You cut the troops’ pay and benefits, sent them into combat without life-saving equipment – then abandoned them to places like Walter Reed, so someone could make a buck off their misery – THE PARTY WHO DESTROYS OUR TROOPS.
Your president is now asking for even more money for Iraq, while at the same time sending in additional troops who are under-equipped and insufficiently trained – THE PARTY OF SURGE ‘N SPLURGE.
You allowed the president to ignore the Constitution and circumvent the law – THE PARTY DEVOID OF LAW & ORDER.
You exercised no oversight when taxpayers’ dollars were shoveled into the pockets of Halliburton, and other war-profiteers, and made no investigation into monies that went ‘missing’ – THE PARTY OF TAKE THE MONEY & RUN.
You mutely accepted and rubber-stamped every whim of the president, without so much as raising a question about its legality or its consequences – THE PARTY OF SPINELESS SHEEP.
You made deals that enriched pharmaceutical companies, oil companies, and corporations, all to the detriment of your constituents – THE PARTY OF CORPORATE SHILLS.
The people of New Orleans drowned while your president’s hand-picked idiots-in-charge made matters worse –THE PARTY OF DEADLY INCOMPETENCE.
Five years after 9-11, and your president’s promise to get Bin Laden, dead or alive, rings has hollow now as it did then – THE PARTY OF EMPTY RHETORIC.
You continue to support the so-called War on Terror, even after intelligence estimates have shown that the president’s policies have made the country less safe – THE PARTY OF NATIONAL INSECURITY.
This Administration lied the country into an unwinnable war, but you continue to pretend it never happened, despite the growing number of casualties – THE PARTY OF WE LIE WHILE YOU DIE.
During your majority, the economy started faltering, the infrastructure was left in disrepair, jobs were outsourced, health care became unaffordable for millions of Americans, the military was stretched to the breaking point, we lost our global allies and the respect of the world – and your response to all of this was invariably that it’s all the Democrats’ fault – THE PARTY OF ABSOLUTELY NO PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.
Just thought I’d give you a head’s-up on how the average American voter is seeing your party these days.
Good luck in ’08, people.
