Schumer: White House Holding ‘Active And Avid Discussion’ Over Gonzales Resignation

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) held a press conference moments ago to react to new emails showing that Karl Rove and Alberto Gonzales had a deeper role in the U.S. Attorney scandal than they originally acknowledged.

Schumer told reporters, “I know, from other sources, that there is an active and avid discussion in the White House whether should stay or not,” adding that “the odds are very high that he will no longer be the attorney general.”

Schumer also revealed that the emails leaked today came from a disgruntled Bush administration official. “One of the reasons everything is getting out here is that there are people, particularly in the Justice Department, who have been so disgusted with what’s happening that information is getting out,” Schumer said. “And I think the White House and the Justice Department know it’s gonna get out whether they release it or not.”

Watch it at link:

Transcript:

SCHUMER: But what’s happened — and one of the reasons everything is getting out here is that there are people, particularly in the Justice Department, who have been so disgusted with what’s happening that information is getting out, and I think the White House and the Justice Department know it’s gonna get out whether they release it or not.

+++

SCHUMER: I think there will be a crescendo for Attorney General Gonzales to resign. I think the odds are very high that he will no longer be the attorney general. I know, from other sources, that there is an active and avid discussion in the White House whether he should stay or not. It’s hard to see how he can be effective as attorney general in the future.

1. Obviously, Gonzales needs to be ridden out of town on a rail.
But there is still the issue of who will replace him -- because the Chimperor and his goons have consistently replaced departing officials with somebody even worse. I didn't think anybody could be worse than Ashcroft, but Gonzales is; and CondorLizard is a worse Secretary of State than Powell.

So somewhere out there is an even more demented, incompetent rabidly right-wing asshat with a law degree, and if Gonzo goes, Bush will find him...

3. Just being realistic.
We know that whenever we think the Bush Regime can go no lower, they manage to dig an even deeper pit of lunacy and malfeasance.

12. I doubt it's even a matter of rightwing
Frankly, I doubt even Bush is ideological in his politics. I think it's all about who kisses his butt best and helps him grasp and maintain power.

4. What? BushCo did a huge document dump
and Josh Marshall took the time and actually read through them. Or at least that is what I heard from KO.

What leak? Those emails where in the official document dump weren't they?

8. Maybe not!
The way I read it these were not "released" they were "leaked".

The ones on the Judiciary Committee website were the ones released by Justice.

10. Stay Albie, stay!
So more leaks of facts will occur, and maybe we just might learn the entire story.

11. I sincerely hope that isn't the end of it
They can't let the issue drop if Gonzalez resigns. At the very least, they need to go after Rove. And, they should research Little Boots' involvement in it, too.

Any Watergate junkies in this thread? Which one went first, Haldeman or Erlichman? :)

15. Does Schumer ever shut up? Just when...
Leahy is pulling out the big guns, Schumer's still ranting on about this. Gonzo quitting pisses on Leahy's fire.

Do these guys ever talk to each other?
