HP: Why the US Attorney scandal is a domestic Iraq.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/terry-curtis-fox/why-the-us-attorney-scand_b_43525.html

The US Attorney scandal could be the big one - the one which finally brings down the miserable reign of George the Terrible. Yes, I know - he should have been impeached for lying to Congress when he started the Iraq war. But he wasn't and he won't be. Obstruction of Justice, however, is another matter.

It's a clear charge, and it's not that far from what brought down Nixon and what nearly brought down Clinton. All of the fired US Attorneys refused to use their office in a partisan manner. (More on this in a moment.) That is a line which even timid electeds should not want crossed.
But the Justice Department scandal is actually bigger than that. In fact, it is part of the only domestic action of this administration which is as bad - if not worse - than the Iraq war.

And that is the politicalization of the entire legal system.

What we must understand is that this is not a new policy. It's actually a continuation of what Bush has done (successfully, thanks in part to Democrats who rolled on appointee after appointee) with the judiciary.

2. We will be plagued for decades
by this:

"Bush has stocked those courts with people whom he trusts to keep the country heading rightward, no matter who wins the next election."

3. That's why we have to be as vigilant with court appointments as they
are.

When the Nader supporters were saying it didn't matter who won -- the Democrat or the Republican -- they refused to acknowledge the effects of a Republican administration on lifetime appointments to the Federal bench.

And people who threaten to desert the Democratic party over particular issues are doing the same thing.
