KEEP TELLING YOURSELF
(For the Bushco Believers - However Many Are Out Still There) By Nancy Greggs
Keep telling yourself that Valerie Plame was never a covert CIA operative – and when the CIA confirmed that she was, they were just funnin’.
Keep telling yourself that Bush insisted that whoever outted Plame would be fired – even though he knew she was never under-cover to begin with – because he couldn’t think of anything else to say.
Keep telling yourself that Libby lied about the goings-on in relation to Plame – who, again, everyone knows was never under-cover – because he’s always wanted to see what the inside of a prison looks like.
Keep telling yourself that it wasn’t Gonzales and Rove behind the attorney firings, and the documents that say otherwise are just plain – well, keep telling yourself they're good, honest men, and they have a really good explanation for everything - just be patient.
While you’re at it, keep telling yourself that the war in Iraq is going just fine, the insurgency is in its last throes, and once we turn that next corner, democracy will reign throughout the Middle East.
Keep telling yourself that we did find those WMDs in Iraq, and we were greeted as liberators with sweets and flowers – the damned liberal media just refused to show the footage.
Keep telling yourself that the country being in trillions of dollars worth of debt is a sign of strong economy.
Keep telling yourself that the PNAC boys – Perle, Kristol, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz et al – are true visionaries. The fact that they’ve been proven wrong about everything should not deter the president from adhering to their advice on all matters.
Keep telling yourself that the Republicans support the troops, and the cuts to their pay, benefits, pensions, and their treatment at hellholes like Walter Reed are just the kind of toughening up measures our soldiers have been begging for.
Keep telling yourself that Kalid Sheikh Mohammed was the mastermind behind everything from 9-11 to the disappearance of Amelia Earhardt – and in his spare time, he sells real estate and gives accordian lessons to terrorists.
Keep telling yourself that Ann Coulter is a best-selling author, and those ‘bulk sales’ icons next to her sales figures are a left-wing plot to keep her from winning that Pulitzer Prize she so obviously deserves.
Keep telling yourself that sanctioning torture is the embodiment of good, Christian values – and Jesus said so himself; it was just edited out of the New Testament by mistake.
Keep telling yourself that the fact that countries around the world now hate us will lead to increased cooperation in intelligence-sharing that could thwart a terrorist plot.
Keep telling yourself that if we don’t persist in fighting ‘em over there, millions of crazed would-be terrorists will book flights, breeze through airport security with explosives, and blow all of our shopping malls to kingdom come.
Keep telling yourself that the money we spend fighting in Iraq every week is a sound investment – even if a lot of it tends to go missing without explanation.
Keep telling yourself that the fact that Halliburton made millions in no-bid government contracts, and the fact that Cheney still owns a substantial amount of stock in the company, is just an amazing coincidence.
Keep telling yourself that when documents come to light that contradict this administration’s previous public statements, the documents are obvious forgeries – or, administration officials merely forgot that what they did and what they said they did were completely different things.
Keep telling yourself that you represent the majority of the country’s thinking on Iraq, on Bush, on the economy, on everything – and those poll numbers that show otherwise are a result of the fix being in.
Keep telling yourself that education and intelligence doesn’t count, because even the most illiterate idiot can grow up to be president …
Okay, you got me on that last one.
