Prediction: Gonzales will resign, and John Cornyn will replace him
Cornyn isn't all that popular, and I expect Bush will want to move him up so Goodhair Perry can appoint one of his good right-wing buddies to fill the seat through 2008.

Thoughts?

2. I'm sorry to say that your prediction is very plausible. Cornyn can
probably be counted on to keep a lid on all the sinister doings yet to be uncovered, and he'd be a bit easier for the Senate to confirm.

Yuck.

8. I concur. I could totally see this happening. And aren't most senators historically easy
on their brethren who go through confirmation hearings?

10. Often, yes. The chamber is more suspicious of "outsiders." I'm wondering
what kind of chatter has been going on between little Dubya and Fred Fielding.

My first thought is that Fielding is a partisan hack, if a fairly intelligent one. So he's smart enough to advise Bush that Gonzales must go, that more bad things will happen if he stays than if he leaves, and that Bush's "loyalty" appears increasingly like mindless stubbornness.

Then I picture Dubya throwing a tantrum and stomping his feet and pouting, refusing to listen to Uncle Fred and Josh Bolten and the other guys. He thinks he hired them to agree with him, and I betcha this time they don't.

I'd hate it if John Cornyn became the Attorney General of the United States.

But it might be just what this pathetic excuse for a president visits upon us.

17. I think he would be confirmed but it would be by a slim margin...
Most Democrats had no problem voting against John Ashcroft and I think the ones that did, like Feingold, learned their lessons. That being said, we would still lose Senators like Ben Nelson and Mark Pryor.

Now if there is a filibuster, that might be successful but there isn't a heavy precedent for filibustering cabinet appointments and I don't think they would filibuster a fellow Senator.

22. No it's not plausible at all.
No way is Cornyn going to give up his fairly safe Senate seat and hitch himself to a lame duck presidency for a year and a half. SCOTUS appointment? You bet. AG? Not a chance in hell.

4. Cornyn is an idiot, so he'd be a likely choice.
We've seen already how, when one of the Bushies leaves to "spend more time with his family" or whatever, the Chimperor almost always comes up with someone who's at least as bad to replace him.

13. Because an Attorney General should not be a partisan hack.
If our illustrious Democratic Senators have any cajones left, they will NOT confirm this morAN.

http://tpmmuckraker.com/cornyn.php

"Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) led an effort to close two tribal casinos in Texas in 2000 while he was Attorney General there. Jack Abramoff, acting on behalf of his clients the Louisianna Coushatta, worked to make sure Cornyn was successful."

11. John Cornyn? Leave his Senate seat? Not bloody likely
Do the math. The score in the Senate is 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans, and two independents. If Cornyn leaves his seat to become the new AG, he leaves a Texas Senate seat open for Barbara Ann Radnofsky to snatch it from an unknown Republican candidate. Karl Rove would rather go vegan and date Nancy Pelosi on the side than let that happen.

16. "Barbara Ann Radnofsky to snatch it"? Oh, get real!
Barbara Ann Radnofsky has ZERO chance of picking up the seat. She and Chris Bell proved to be Tweedle Dull and Tweedle Duller.

derby, the Republicans have plenty of right wing nuts that can fire up the R base and keep the seat.

18. That base is a wee bit smaller.
And we do come to the question of whether Texas ever really did vote Republican, anyway.

12. I'm not sure he would get confirmed ... Most of them still remember the last time a senator ....
.... moved to the AG's office ..... John Ashcroft. I really do NOT see an easy confirmation for Cornyn.

19. I agree...
plus he has some pretty big skeletons of his own from his days on Texas Supreme Court.

As to his seat possibly going to A Dem, there's no way, but Perry may very well have HIS eye on it.

23. Cornyn was Bu$h's AG in Texas. Cornyn carried Bu$h's water in Texas.
Cornyn was pivotal in the Funeral-gate scandal cover-up. Funeral-gate broke right as then-Texas governor George Bu$h entered the 2000 presidential race.
