WP/AP: Analysis: Clinton Talks About Dark Times

NEW YORK -- The vast right-wing conspiracy. Evil and bad men. Sticking with people who stick with you. As she campaigns, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton is conjuring the painful memories of her husband's presidency: his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, independent counsel Ken Starr's politically charged pursuit and finally, in 1998, the Republican-controlled Congress' impeachment of Bill Clinton.
Humiliated and enraged, Hillary Clinton stuck with her husband throughout the ordeal -- her most famous "stand by your man" moment.
Now making her own White House bid, the New York senator speaks in generally glowing terms about Bill Clinton's presidency. From the economic prosperity of the 1990s to his fondness for Dunkin' Donuts, she has eagerly embraced her husband's legacy.
At the same time, she's ventured into the darker shadows of the Clinton White House years, a move that allows her to define it on her own terms for a new generation of voters.
Linda Fowler, a professor of political science at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, called the Lewinsky matter "the 800-pound gorilla" of Clinton's campaign and said she has little choice but to address it.
"Many Democrats, many women, have very mixed feelings about what went on during the Clinton presidency and it's part of the reluctance to crown Hillary Clinton the nominee," Fowler said. "So she's telling activists, 'I understand what your concerns are and I'm not afraid to talk about them.' And she's doing it with humor, which is usually the best way."...
