9NEWS NOW

Washington, DC (WUSA) -- A major 9NEWS NOW EXCLUSIVE -- allegations from a former inspector at Walter Reed of widespread and dangerous problems in nearly all the buildings at the Army's premier hospital.

Burst steam pipes near electrical cables, rats, mold, and holes in floors and walls -- all of that extends far beyond the well-publicized problems at the notorious Building 18.

And 9NEWS NOW has learned managers may have been slow to respond.

A worried quality control inspector, Mark Cordell, finally quit last week in frustration, and brought his fears to 9NEWS NOW.

"I won't sit back and watch someone get killed," he says while running through 81 pictures of the problems on a laptop computer.

Cordell says the worst of it may be Building 40. The old research institute has been condemned, but last week, the private contractor now responsible for maintaining Walter Reed sent workers in to fix a leak.

Cordell points to a picture showing the terrible decay inside the building and says, "The water is actually on the ground floor here. There is water halfway across the ground floor. And there's electricity too. There's high voltage that goes to this building. Two thirteen thousand volt transformers. Through the basement filled with water."

1. I remember watching "Born on the Fourth of July" in the 90s and thinking
"I'm so glad our troops don't have to go through that anymore"

I feel so fucking naive right now :grr:

3. Seems strange but I remember a time in my life when people (having
just gotten rid of one crooked administration) had the same impression you did (but about a lot of things). We thought we had seen the worst of the lot of American politicians with the Nixon/Agnew/Watergate/Archibald Cox/Rose Marie Wood eighteen minutes insanity.

So we got lazy and complacent. Turned out the most selfish and greedy politicians ever to befoul the same places our Founding Fathers worked and walked and put together this country and made it an example to be proud of the world over. Yep, look at what we got, what crawled out from under their rocks and holes all the while making sure they never had to go and do any of the real dirty work, like fight in a war. That was for other people, those not as good, not as deserving to lead as they were/are.

2. That pic really sums up what I consider the state of this country's infrastructure.
The wingnuts pound their chests and proclaim how mighty a nation we are, when in reality we're two thirteen thousand volt transformers away from disaster.

4. You paint a bleak picture, but I'm sure you're correct. nt
