You Can't Argue With Stupid

You Can’t Argue With Stupid
By Nancy Greggs

It’s true. In any political discussion, you can educate the ill-informed, you can make some headway amongst those with common sense. But you can’t argue with Stupid – and you’re wasting your time if you try.

And Stupid was out in force this week.

Valerie Plame was not a covert CIA operative; she was a desk jockey. But according to Stupid, she was a desk jockey who sent her husband on a mission to Niger. Yes, it was right there in her job description: “Typing, filing, answering the phone, authorizing the sending of individuals to investigate activities in foreign nations that will have national and international impact, and could be grounds for sending the United States to war.” She also made coffee for the entire office.

Stupid is also quick to point out that everybody knew Plame didn’t have covert status, and therefore couldn’t be outted in the first instance. Of course, Stupid has no explanation as to why his president didn’t look into Plame’s status from the outset, and issue a statement confirming her non-covert status – which, of course, would have put an end to the discussion right then and there – and instead chose to announce investigations into finding out who had leaked the name of a covert CIA operative.

Maybe Stupid thinks that his president was just too busy to make a couple of phone calls. Maybe Bush has to make coffee for the entire office, too.

Stupid will be the first person to point out to you that just because the CIA director confirmed Plame’s status doesn’t make it so – I mean, how would he know better than Victoria Toensing (duh!)?

As for Libby facing prison for lying about the disclosure of a non-covert operative, Stupid is still grappling with that one. Maybe Bush let him be the fall guy for a non-crime because he just doesn’t like him. Maybe Libby complained about the White House coffee once too often.

If you visit the websites where Stupid posts, you’ll understand the breadth of his knowledge about all things political. Stupid doesn’t understand why the Democrats are always harping about the national debt. He will explain to you, very patiently, that the national debt is what is owed to the country by nations who have been borrowing from us for years. When that number hit the trillions, Stupid was ecstatic – he could see the country rolling in dough-re-me for decades to come. Besides, based on Stupid’s logic, if the country ever does find itself in debt, the treasury department will just print more money – end of problem.

The thing that really gets Stupid going is the War on Terror. He gets incensed over the fact that the rest of us just don’t get it. This is a war we have to win. He acknowledges that for every so-called terrorist we kill, a dozen more are incited to take his place. Don’t ever ask Stupid how we’re going to win a war in which we keep encouraging new recruits – because you don’t understand that we have to win this thing. Stupid figures he’ll get the last laugh when we find out that the last terrorist on earth has been taken out by US forces. He can’t explain when or how that will happen, but that doesn’t dampen his enthusiasm – he already has a case of Champale on ice, waiting to toast that particular Mission Accomplished.

Like I said, you just can’t argue with Stupid. He knows that the sun revolves around a six thousand-year-old flat earth, and global warming is a hoax being perpetrated by the people who own the weather networks in an obvious attempt to up their ratings.

He knows that an increase of attacks in Iraq is a sign of progress, because those insurgents wouldn’t be so pissed off if we weren’t handing them their asses on a regular basis.

He doesn’t know what Victory in Iraq actually means, but he’s damned sure if we don’t win, it will be because the American people aren’t supporting this war – our opinions at home, rather than military strategy and planning, being the make-or-break in such situations.

The bad news is that Stupid is out there – and he gets more than his fair share of airtime on FOX, on Limbaugh, on O’Reilly. You’ll know him when you hear him – he’s the guy who thinks everyone should sign up and go to Iraq – except him, because he’s busy keeping his mother’s basement safe for democracy.

Despite all of the news stories about Walter Reed, or soldiers being sent into combat without sufficient safety equipment, weapons or training, he knows the Republicans are Supporting the Troops – because they said so, that’s why. And he can’t think of a single time they ever lied to him, or anyone else.

So do yourself a favor, and don’t argue with Stupid. He’s a hopeless case – and by simply opening his mouth, he can actually prove it beyond all reasonable doubt.

6. The answers to questions about "Stupid" and how to deal with him/her are here.
http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/
Download this book and read it

I really had my eyes open and my understanding deepened by this book. It's a new book (free on the Web) and really explains a lot about this. Many years of solid research back this up. This is a book and research that John Dean used in his new book "Conservatives Without conscience".

There are two types of Authoritarians, the "Social Dominaters" (*, Robertson, Cheney, Falwell, etc.) and the RWAs (the followers). The RWAs have blind belief and, well Altemeyer explains it better ...

"If, on the other hand, you’re way ahead of me, and believe the extreme right-wing elements in America are poised to take it over, permanently, I think you can still get a lot from this book. The studies explain so much about these people. Yes, the research shows they are very aggressive, but why are they so hostile? Yes, experiments show they are almost totally uninfluenced by reasoning and evidence, but why are they so dogmatic? Yes, studies show the Religious Right has more than its fair share of hypocrites, from top to bottom; but why are they two-faced, and how come one face never notices the other? Yes, their leaders can give the flimsiest of excuses and even outright lies about things they’ve done wrong, but why do the rank-and-file believe them? What happens when authoritarian followers find the authoritarian leaders they crave and start marching together?

I think you’ll find this book “explains a lot.” Many scattered impressions about the enemies of freedom and equality become solidified by science and coherently connected here."

I'm familiar with Altmeyer & with what Dean did with his work, but I had no handy single source for all this stuff. As a psychologist myself, and a near-contemporary of Altmeyer, I had a grounding in the old authoritarianism literature (had to study Adorno, Festinger, etc.). Since reading Dean I've been talking about Altmeyer's work a lot, & this is REALLY helpful.

Anyway, thank you, SharonAnn.

12. Here's the thing ...
All of the above is not off the top of my head -- these are 'facts' I've actually gleaned from perusing their websites. There are people out there who actually believe that the 'national debt' is the debt that is owed to the US, not the money we owe.

My favorite Stupid website discussion occurred the day Rumsfeld resigned. A bunch of them were incensed that he'd quit after Nancy Pelosi had been elected Speaker, because that meant she got to pick his replacement.

Oy vey ...

27. You're brave to peruse those websites. I have to admit

that I'd never heard that "the 'national debt' is the debt that is owed to the US, not the money we owe."

I guess my American History teacher in h.s., who actually forced us to memorize what every article of the Constitution says, never covered that.

He did tell us, after our overall poor performance on the test over the Constitution that we were ignorant. Then he said "Don't go home and tell you parents I said you were stupid. Stupid means you can't learn. Ignorant means you haven't learned. You people are ignorant by your own choice."

Today, the man would probably be fired for damaging our self-esteem, but I doubt that I'm the only one who learned an important lesson from that dressing-down of the entire class.

Nobody has to be ignorant. Choosing ignorance is stupid.

45. I had never heard
their national debt theory. Not in my wildest dreams...

Using their logic my credit card debt is actually money the credit card company owes to me. Think of it. The more I buy the more I have coming when they finally pay up. And those monthly bills I get in the mail? Just courtesy notices letting me know my balance and any interest I've earned. (How thoughtful.) Here I thought they were something I needed to pay. Those credit card people must get a good laugh every time I send THEM money. Sheesh.

I kept wondering why I would always see discussions about "Debt? What debt? What are these people talking about." Couldn't understand how (no matter HOW stupid) they weren't aware of the national debt.

Then I saw a post stating that the Chinese OWE US $17 trillion dollars, so why is everyone yakking about the PROBLEM with the national debt. They probably figure we're complaining about NOT COLLECTING on our debt when we need the money for Iraq, etc.

Geesh ...

54. Remember, you're not responsible for how your parents turned out.

I think it can be spelled madrassah or madrassa, and wouldn't be surprised if both are incorrect English versions. "Osama" supposedly spells/pronounces his name "Ubama," and it took the Chinese centuries, I guess, to teach us to say "Beijing" instead of "Peking."

9. This reminds me of what William Kristol said today on Faux Snooze Sundee
He was snipping to Juan Williams about some party that Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson went to in DC that was "anti-war"...and actually said that covert Cia operatives are not allowed to go to parties in DC when the media is there or involved... whuh?

So the covert CIA spy can't go to parties, I guess, because they're supposed to be "covert"...er...um... after all, they have to wear Avery 5678 lapel labels wherever they go that say they are "Hi, I am a covert CIA agent: pay no attention to me"...

So that's how we find out who is under-cover - check the DC party invites, and whoever doesn't show up is obviously covert. Duh, it was right there in front of our noses all along!

Of all of the PNAC idiots, Bill Kristol is my all-time favorite. He's been proven wrong about everything he's ever stated or predicted, and yet he's out there doing the TV talk thing every week, totally perplexed about the fact that nobody is taking his latest theories seriously.

Kristol is the epitome of Stupid -- proven by the fact that he's obviously too dumb to recognize his own oh-so-obvious stupidity.

I'll never forget his appearance on Colbert.

"Colbert: Speaking of thinking alike, you were a member, or are a member of the New Project for the American Century, correct?

Kristol: I am.

Colbert: Were or am, am?

Kristol: Were and am.

Colbert: How's that project coming?

Kristol: well. it's..(stammering)

Colbert: How's the New American Century, looks good to me?

Kristol: Ahh--I think...hehe yea--I'm speechless..

Colbert: Really?"

-Handed him and his ideology their collective ass right out of the gate, it was beautiful.

Meanwhile, no one showed up to my last house-party... I had no idea so many of my friends were spies! I'm so glad that's cleared up.

We are asked to meet Stupid halfway, in the interest of gaining persuadable voters. No big deal. All we have to do is parrot of few of his Stupid views now and then. It'll work great. Unless the GOP replays the clips during the election cycle. And we know they wouldn't do that.

Very important part of our strategy for victory. Worked in '02 and '04, didn't it?

40. Spinelessness is all the rage at DNC headquarters!
I mean, if people are so stupid to vote a man into office who misled us into war in order to prevent gays from marrying, even though this would not have happened if the Democrat won, and so profoundly stupid that 30% of our populace still support the "performance" of this bumbling idiot, then it only follows that the leading Democratic contenders should continue to propagate various stupid repug perspectives in order to get stupid's votes. :sarcasm:

The question is who is more stupid? Those idiots who will still vote repug even though they have shown contempt for our soldiers, constitution and way of life or the Democratic frontrunners who think these people are "smart" enough to see that Dems can be as stupid as repugs and will vote for them instead.

I would rather inform those people who are both not stupid and not paying attention about current affairs so that they might vote than convince the stupid to be smart or advise the Democrats to give up on trying to convince stupid to not be as stupid by throwing them some "stupid" bones. But that's just me.
:banghead:

21. GET OUT!!!!!!!!
Major confession to make:

When I was a kid, my grandfather owned a bar in Brooklyn. The Rheingold distributor would drop off the ballot boxes at the bar every year, complete with pads of ballots where patrons could put an X next to their favourite contestant for Miss Rheingold - the filled boxes were then picked up at a later date for counting.

My cousin Jeanne and I both agreed on who we wanted to win one year -- so we went behind the bar, grabbed ALL of the ballot pads, and filled them all in for our choice.

When we heard months later that the girl we'd stuffed the ballot box for HAD WON, we were scared witless! We considered ourselves fugitives from justice for YEARS, convinced that the Rheingold police, in conjunction with the FBI, would show up at Grandpa's bar sooner or later, demanding to know the whereabouts of the two ten-year-olds who had 'thrown' the Miss Rheingold contest. I don't think we really heaved a sigh of relief until we were out of high school - and figured that the statute of limitations had run out.

Of course, as I write this, I realize that maybe, like murder, there IS NO STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS on Miss Rheingold election fraud.

If you don't see me posted on DU for the next few days, PLEASE start a thread to raise bail money. Thanks in advance.

That is exactly right and exactly what I have been saying.

Thank you for agreeing with me.

We are still faced, however, with the question of why she exposed her cover and herself by donating to Gore using her name linked to her cover's name for the entire world of intelligence nerds to see and to question.

If any of those intelligence agencies had prior suspicion that her employer was a cover, then she blew her own cover. Do you get it yet? Affirmative action to not be detected is what she failed to do.

Sit down, read this and grunt. It may sink in.

Note the snarkiness at the end--it's a regular thing with this loser. He's not only terminally STUPID, he pats himself on the back for his stupidity! Flash then explained to him (not for the first time) that he obviously had no clue what "cover" meant in an intelligence context.

I should warn everyone that it will make your head hurt if you try to follow this idiot's "reasoning." Freeper-speak seems to have that effect on normal people.

34. That question was also on Toensing's STUPID list.
I thought it was stupid when I heard her ask it, and now I see her fellow Stupid-ers are spreading it around like a virus.

41. more STOOPID stuff...
"Joseph Wilson's Amazing Left-Wing Dreamland" by Ben Johnson (another alias for Stupid)
http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=18847
This "article" claims
'In fact, Plame blew not only her own cover but that of a CIA front – in order to make a political donation to a leftist Democrat. The politics of non-partisan “centrist” Ambassador Wilson’s wife is perhaps best expressed by her $372 donation to the George Soros front group Americans Coming Together. Plame made her grant to ACT – the part of the “Shadow Party” entrusted with getting out John Kerry’s vote – in October 2004. However, the “undercover” agent previously used her CIA name, “Ms. Valerie E. Wilson” – and also disclosed her home address on the form – to make a $1,000 donation to Al Gore in 2000, listing her job as an “Analyst” at “Brewster-Jennings & Associates.” Thus, her hard-driving political agenda and dismissive regard for national security exposed her fellow agents to even greater risk.'

Stupid doesn't seem to get that
1. her marriage to Joseph Wilson was public knowledge,
and 'Ms. Valerie E. Wilson' was not some fictitious 'CIA name'
2. her home address was public knowledge (duh!)
3. she did not list her employer as 'Brewster-Jennings & Associates, CIA Front'
4. she listed her position as 'Analyst', not 'Analyst (i.e. undercover CIA agent)'

My head started to spin, so I couldn't finish reading it.

Stupid will next claim she 'blew her non-covert cover' or that
'nothing wrong was done but if anything wrong was done she made us do it'.

25. More stupid thought
When Tom Foley was voted out of office several people in his district thought they were voting in a new Speaker of the House, because the Speaker came from that district. And these idiots operate two ton vehicles at high speeds on our roads. Hide the women and children; many of them carry loaded weapons too.

29. Stupid was just on C-SPAN saying that Dems may be funding the insurgency

in Iraq. Dems, according to Stupid, rejoice at the increase in body counts. I couldn't even follow the rest of it.

I was able to get my jaw off the floor when the next caller mentioned Noam Chomsky, went on to discuss his talks with actual Iraqi vets who refer to the current phase as "Vietnamization," presumably to make the link or because it's easier to pronounce than "Iraqification," though I'd disagree with the latter, and said the root cause of the war is oil.

Who's peddling these lies about Dems rejoicing in body counts and possibly funding the insurgency in Iraq to Stupid, Nance?

Has any DUer ever heard anyone, regardless of political views, rejoice in the body counts?

our little bit of liberalism by the bay, going to each and ever peace march dating back to the VN war (the one who's lessons seem to have been missed, perhaps bush was AWOL on that lecture day) I have NEVER heard anyone, not even the most radical left wing red diaper baby EVER rejoice in the killing of an American solider. That's just BIG LIE propaganda at its best.

47. One of my articles was printed on a Dem/Rep website ...
... a few months ago. It was the first paragraphs or so, with a link back here to DU.

Said one of the 'replies': "There's NO WAY I'm going over to DU. That's the site where the posters were CHEERING about the fact that Pat Tilman had died."

Where indeed do these people get their information?

52. I'm guessing they get it from Rush and FOX, et al.

Including Coulter, who has said liberals should be killed. If the article is still up, I'd like to read it. PM me if you don't want to post it here.

Great sig line, by the way. Molly will not be forgotten. She poked fun at people but she wasn't as mean-spirited as so many conservatives are. I think she'll be appreciated by future generations when Coulter is forgotten. People like a pinch of vinegar but a glass of it is too much. And Coulter is quite a tall glass of vinegar.

65. Your sig line
Is kind and loving and self effacing but you have no idea how much of the spirit of the great Molly Ivins you carry in your writing. I'm actually wondering if you have been adjusting your writing style a bit lately to emulate her? Not a complaint, mind you, as you do a great Molly Ivins style piece and mixed with your own inemitable style, it is sublime.

protesters reveled in the deaths of americans in vietnam. They never seem to understand the concept of ANTI-WAR. Looks like they just got out the old playbook.

64. Bravo! So recommended.
I had to go for lab tests this afternoon, and my next door neighbor gave me a ride. As we were waiting I was catching him up on the latest in the firing of the US Attorneys and telling him about the head Judge at the Hague thinking about charging Tony Blaire with war crimes over Iraq.

He asked if Bush could be charged and I explained we are not a signatory to the International Criminal Court so they have no jurisdiction. Then I explained Iraq wants to sign on, and then they WOULD. Bad for Bush. We also talked about the 60 Minutes interview last night, as he had never even heard of Haditha. I know, we waited a long time.

Anyway I noticed about 2 minutes in to this conversation that I was actually sitting NEXT to Stupid. Or one of his relatives anyway. Needless to say Stupid was NOT pleased about our conversation. Not pleased at all. He actually grunted when I said subpeona power was awesome. hehe

When I was finally called he verbally attacked my neighbor telling him, "I had no idea what I was talking about." He called me a liberal scumbag as well, though I didn't find that out until the ride home.

My friend then asked Stupid just what I said that was wrong. He just muttered something about us 'damn liberals' and moved to the other side of the waiting room. LOL I hope someone in the waiting room heard something they hadn't before. It was quite packed.

I would so like to have confronted him. As someone who spends several hours a day online using their thumbs to read the news, I would have owned his ass.

70. I'm worried about stupid
Edited on Mon Mar-19-07 08:12 PM by AikidoSoul
Stupid is everywhere and his numbers are growing.

Education is failing to teach stupid and stupid's children how to think.

The MSM does not reach stupid to educate him about the real facts.

The MSM serves to harden stupid's prejudices and to inspire hatred and blind loyalty.

The MSM helps keep stupid stupid with demagoguery and jingoism.

Stupid is almost always ready for a fight.

It's easier for stupid to fight than to debate and think.

Stupid feels better about himself when he is hating someone else.

It's hard to deal with millions and millions of stupids.

It's impossible to defend Democracy with millions and millions of stupids who don't understand what Democracy means.
