1. Per the originator
it didn't mean anything. He was just trying to get a little attention and he succeeded in that endeavor.

5. I am all for free speech...
....but this kid was trying to instigate a problem. Right or wrong...marijuana is illegal and advocating in a school at that age (remember..the bill of rights does NOT apply to minors)is asking for trouble.

Course..some would say it is because he mentioned Jesus.

/off to find my bong...Jesus is welcome to come too.

10. The real question is was it in school/on a school field trip
If so, he was wrong. The appellate court held it was not, so the school was wrong. Its really a determination of facts not law, which makes me wonder (and scared) that SCOTUS took it on.

IIRC at least one of the sign holders was a non-student. What if they all had been. Would the principal been citzed for vandalism?

12. It wasn't on school property
He was across the street:

Kenneth W. Starr had a strategy for convincing the Supreme Court that an Alaska high school principal and school board did not violate a student's free-speech rights by punishing him for displaying the words "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" on a 14-foot-long banner across the street from school as the 2002 Olympic torch parade went by.

15. School claims it was a school event that the students were effectively still in school
That is really the fact in dispute and the piviotal point for all of this

17. But he had been released from school to attend the event. It wasn't
as if it was on a Saturday in a parking lot or mall etc. I can see both sides have a point. Also I don't know if he was released for the day or if he was expected to return to class after the event. That could also be a factor in the SC decision.

7. My favorite line
comes from a Slate article: "Nine out of 10 potheads I polled for this piece confirmed these words are no more meaningful when stoned."
The article also has the best headline: *Bong Hits 4 Jesus.
Because you just can't improve on 'Bong Hits 4 Jesus'*

20. Thanks for the link. Apparently, the student was just repeating...
...a phrase he saw on a snowboard.

9. My God, Don't You Know?
That kid was trying to influence every young person in Alaska to become a pothead!

He was telling them that is is okay to be a doper because Jesus was a doper!

Thank the real baby Jesus in the cradle that Ken Starr and the Bush regime want to give school principals the power to monitor everything kids say -- in school or out of school -- to make sure that no 'pro-drug' language is ever used.

Really ... "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" is just plain old terrorism. We should be praising Starr and Bush for protecting young people from themselves and that subversive First Amendment nonsense.

Oh, yeah.

13. It is just extremely clever and silly!
It makes fun of posters and signs, etc. in a very clever few words...and I believe that was it's purpose.

18. And as I said on another post about this
the really funny part of the whole thing (to me at least) is that marijuana isn't even illegal under Alaska state law (although it is illegal to have it within a few hundred yards of a school, as my daughter sadly found out) -- but a BANNER?? Give me a break.
