WOW! Democrats' response was swift and firm: Start Authorizing Subpoenas.
Edited on Tue Mar-20-07 06:28 PM by kansasblue
Proud to be a Dem!

WASHINGTON By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer

- A defiant President Bush warned Democrats Tuesday to accept his offer...

Democrats' response to his proposal was swift and firm: They said they would start authorizing subpoenas as soon as Wednesday for the White House aides.

"Testimony should be on the record and under oath. That's the formula for true accountability," said Patrick Leahy (news, bio, voting record), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

9. Isn't that the mantra we were lambasted with again and again
over the wire tapping and patriot act? "If you don't have anything to hide, what are you worried about?"

Time for a dose of their own medicine.

18. Exactly
What advice would you be giving to the PResident of the United States that you wouldn't want to see the light of day! What would you not be proud of? What would you be hiding? And How many times have I seen hearings where the person being questioned when they got to a sensitve subject says soemthing like..."Well Senator I do not feel comfortable talking to you about that subject in open sessions but I would be happy to give you that info in closed session still under oath of course"!

11. TalKing point for Dems...31 of Clintons Top aides testified under OATH on 47 occasions
Edited on Tue Mar-20-07 06:46 PM by dicknbush
According to the Congressional Research Service, under President Clinton, 31 of his top aides testified on 47 different occasions. The aides who testified included some of Clinton’s closest advisors:

Harold Ickes, Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff - 7/28/94

George Stephanopoulos, Senior Adviser to the President for Policy and Strategy - 8/4/94

John Podesta, Assistant to the President and Staff Secretary - 8/5/94

Bruce R. Lindsey, Assistant to the President and Deputy Counsel to the President - 1/16/96

Samuel Berger, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs - 9/11/97

Beth Nolan, Counsel to the President - 5/4/00

In contrast, between 2000 and 2004, Bush allowed only one of his closest advisers, then-Assistant to the President for Homeland Security Tom Ridge, to appear in front of Congress. He has also refused three invitations from Congress for his aides to testify, a first since President Richard Nixon in 1972. Clinton did not refuse any.

A number of his top aides testified before congress once. Dick Cheney probably remembers that one.

16. That may be true but of course the public then gets to see once again
How corrupt these guys are and that they pad the government to protect themselves not the constitution. In the long run it may help if the courts are in play. Remember how many time Clinton went to the Supremes for relief only to be turned aside. It would be really great to see those same decisions thrown right back in Bushes face so that he has to send his criminal cabal to the Hill. We shall see!

23. I don't think they'll get his back this time
Look at the rulings relating to Gitmo and the enemy combatant issue. I think they'll slam him down, they know that doing otherwise hurts their own legitimacy too.

They cannot countenance refusal of subpoenas. This is clear corruption that noone can fail to understand. 94 senators voted today to strip Bush of the power to appoint US attorneys without senate confirmation, Republican and Democratic.

It's the beginning of the End for the Bush administration. Pelosi '07!
