Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco Won't Run For Reelection
By Greg Sargent | bio

Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco is set to announce this evening that she won't be seeking reelection, according to local WAFB 9 News. Blanco, who was elected in November 2003, becoming the first woman to ever hold the office, had been saying she'd run as late as last week, telling reporters: "My plan is to continue running." Blanco's toughest challenger was seen to be Rep. Bobby Jindal.

1. That would be "Rep. Bobby Jindal (R-LA01)"
I do hope the Gret Stet can come up with a strong Dem candidate at this late date. Rumormongering (as much a fixture of life down there as Mardi Gras, the Saints, or gumbo) centers around former Sen. John Breaux; word is the 'pukes are already gearing up to challenge his residency, since he lives in Md. but still owns property in La., and La. law is rather vague on who is considered a "citizen" for residence purposes.

The problem with Jindal, or any repuke governor for that matter, is that he would have a vested interest in ensuring that displaced New Orleanians -- that is, Democrats -- never return. Thus, the recovery process would end right then and there. :(

2. Breaux will run and will win
The Repubs don't have the legal ground to stop him and he has the reputation as a responsible, capable stable leader. He ain't flashy and he is DLC but his upright and honest (or as honest as a DLC guy can be). Also, the bottom line is that Bubba doesn't really care for Jindal, so Jindal will have an uphill fight to stay competitive with Breaux.

3. Good. She had absolutely no chance. Go Breaux.
