isn't it to hold subpoenas as a final chance for the WH to voluntary comply OR begin real negotiations? That polite path was not enough to win the talking point GOP over but it blunted their attempt to make this seem a "partisan witch hunt" as per instructions from their kennel owners in the WH.
But the wheels are indeed grinding and everyone knows this is a road to repeating the Watergate process. I am sure they have ways to change history this time- ways that have been tried before- but repeating the crimes ever more incompetently and arrogantly with zero power of reasoning at the top(*) will only make it slightly different and still inevitable.
For those unaware of the painfully slow agony of the Democratic majority in those days everyone takes comfort in the somewhat successful end of that process- without impeachment. Removals of AG's, the Veep, aides stuck like tar to the break-in and all the connecting money scandals. The fear and anger growing against tricky Dick who threatened the nation with his power struggle. today we assume we have inherited sure justice, yet Dick never went to trial, never was impeached, was pardoned and his minions haunt us today with wilder belligerence and hubris thinking they can do the job of tyranny and getting away with it totally better. But they surrendered all that guile and possibility a long time ago for crony incompetence and simple minded audacity.
Their only strength continues to be the weakness of decent people in going slowly, reluctantly, by half measures and understatements against the shame polluting the highest offices of the land. If some think the Demoocrats NOW are slower or weaker than then I would disagree. The Bushes do not have the best of all possible villainous strategies. The Democrats do not have the best of all possible accountability strategies. The press never was great but now it is horrible and an impediment to the public getting more involved. As the slow grinding away continues the WH will become more fragmented, helpless and isolated until the rigid power bands snap.
